Andrew Moore tossed a three hitter, facing just three over the minimum possible number of players. Moore struck out 4, got 9 Grizzlie fly outs, 1 sac bunt and induced 7 ground ball outs, including a 7th inning rally killing double play with no outs. The double play grounder was particularly thrilling as the batter was Luke Stone, who hit the grand slam against Thurston to tie the Colts in the quarterfinals.
The only serious scare by the Grizzlies was in the bottom of the fifth with two outs. Ashland shortstop Brent Hegdahl singled. He was replaced for a pinch runner. The next batter, Brady Thomas, hit a deep fly ball to right - well past Highlander right fielder Ryan Delaney. Delaney turned around with his head down, sprinted to the track, turned back around, found the ball and made the catch with the pinch runner heading for home.
The Highlanders didn't pick up a hit until the 5th inning. Ashland's Oregon State bound Ian Kendall had struck out 9 through four innings. Kendall was looking too fast to hit, but he was also having a little trouble with the strike zone and he walked or hit 5 batters through five. North had two men on in the third, and three on in both the fourth and fifth innings. But Kendall ended each inning with a K.
Fate took a hard turn in North Eugene's direction in the top of the fifth. Kyle DeHaven singled to the right side. Kendall got Clayton to K for the first out. Then Ashland fell apart briefly. Kendall walked Jonny Lari to put men on first and second. Erik Long then hit a perfect double play ball to first. The Grizzlie first baseman threw wide to second pulling the shortstop off the bag and then the throw to first was late. Now the bases were loaded with one out. Delaney singled in DeHaven for the games first run. Next, Luke Ferrenburg hit a sharp grounder to the third baseman, who was playing in and got Lari at the plate. With two outs and the bases still loaded, Moore than hit a 75 foot grounder to third. The third baseman made a desperation throw to first --make that over first. Long scored on the hit and Delaney scored on the throwing error. Ferrenburg, trying to score all the way from first on the overthrow, was out at home on a very close play. That made it 3-0, North Eugene.
Moore just had to get through the meat of the order the next two innings and the Highlanders would wear the crown. In the sixth, Ashland's leadoff hitter singled with one out. Moore moved him to second on a wild pitch just to get the Highlander fans nervous. Moore got the second out on a fly ball to right and K'd Kendall for the third out.
Ashland's clean up hitter led off the bottom of the 7th with a single. That set the stage for Luke Stone to tighten things up, but Moore got him to pull a grounder to first. Unlike the Grizzlies, North turned the double play, Moore to Long to Chris 'Big Cat' Clayton. Moore got the final Grizzlie to fly out to Delaney in right and the Highlanders became state champs.
While Moore pitched the better game today, you could certainly see why Ashland's Ian Kendall is going to play for a D-1 team. Seven Highlanders joined Kendall's fan Klub, with only Delaney and Garrett Harpole avoiding getting K'd.
In the end, succes came about through North's outstanding team D, and their ability to forget their K's and LOB's while moving forward and applying constant pressure until they finally broke through. Great job Highlanders!

Mills throws 1 hitter, K's 5, walks 2 (both in the first inning). Gives up the single with one out in the 6th.
Mills took the day off at the plate, but nobody cared as Mills stymied the Bulldogs and every other starting Highlander hitter got a hit. Kyle DeHaven got the Highlanders going in the first with a 360 foot bases loaded double, good for three rbi's. Moore was 3-3 with three rbi's. Ferrenburg doubled in two. Harpole was 1-3 with 2 rbi's.

Great season for the Colts comes to an end when #2 ranked Ashland explodes for six runs on no outs in the top of the fifth to tie it 7-7. The Colts never gave up, but only two men got on base for Thurston in their at bats in the final three innings.
Colt homers by Tyler Johnson, Peanut Havens and Kyle Wright.
Phinney started and was up 7-1 (the run unearned) after four. Ashland opened the fifth with two 90 foot singles, followed by a hard hit double that scored two runs to make it 7-3. An intentional walk and a single loaded the bases for the Grizzlies. Thurston made a pitching change with no outs, and the Ashland batter hit a grand salami to tie the game.
Ashland opened the 7th with a hard hit double. The next batter bunted to get on first and push the runner on second to third. A deep fly ball sac fly scored the winning run for Ashland.
A heartbreaker for the Colts. But what a season after graduating 10 all leaguers. Almost making it to the semis is a fantastic accomplishment. The Register Guard Ashland Daily Tidings

North played small ball and got a great pitching performance from Andrew Moore to beat the Klamath Union Pelicans 3 - 2. Moore struck out 16 batters in his complete game effort, and had a string of 7 consecutive strikeouts. He allowed 5 hits and walked 2.
North scored a run in the 1st without a hit. Ryan Delaney and Moore drew walks, Garrett Harpole was hit by a pitch to load he bases, and the Garrett Mills was also hit by a pitch to drive in the run.
In the 2nd, Jonny Lari led off with a walk, was sacrificed to 2nd by Chris Clayton, took 3rd on a wild pitch, and scored on an RBI single by Delaney.
The Pelicans tied it in the 6th on a long 2 run double by Alden Goebel. North got out of the inning when the next batter Donavin Weiser grounded out unassisted to Clayton at first, who then threw to third to get Goebel. He beat the throw but slid past the bag and was tagged out to complete the double play.
North went ahead in the top of the 7th. Moore walked and then with 2 outs, Garrett Mills hit a ball that was knocked down by the pitcher Justin Chavarria. Mills beat it out for an infield hit and the throw got away for an error, allowing Moore to score. Moore then struck out the side in the 7th to end the game.
Garrett Harpole was 2 - 3 with a double for North.
KU's Justin Chavarria pitched a complete game as well. He only yielded 5 hits, but walked 5 and hit 3 batters. Only 2 of the runs he gave up were earned. He also had 2 hits and a stolen base in the game. . The Register Guard Klamath Herald and News

In a game delayed over an hour by rain, North Eugene defeated the Corvallis Spartans 13 - 2. North had 11 hits, and both of Corvallis' runs were unearned.
North jumped out in front with 5 runs in the second with RBI hits from Ryan Delaney, Luke Ferrenberg, and Andrew Moore. Corvallis got 1 back in the 3rd with an RBI single from Corey Ingland after a NEHS error on a potential double play ball. Corvallis got another run in the 5th on an RBI single by Kellen Sparks, but the run was unearned as a passed ball had advanced the runners into scoring position. North then put the game away with 4 runs in the 6th and 4 more in the 7th. Kyle DeHaven and Ryan Delaney both had 2 run doubles in the 6th inning. In the 7th, Jonny Lari had a bases loaded 2 run double off the wall in left field that missed clearing the wall for a grand slam by a few feet. Joe Lindley and Ryan Delaney added RBI singles. Delaney was 3 - 4 with a double, a walk, and 4 RBIs. Garret Harpole had a double and 2 runs scored. Kyle DeHaven was 2 - 3 with a double, a walk, 2 RBIs, and 3 runs scored. Jonny Lari had a double, a walk, a run scored, and 2 RBIs.
On the mound for North, Garret Mills went the first 4 innings for the win, giving up 2 hits, 1 run (0 earned), and striking out 6. Chris Clayton pitched the next 2 innings, giving up 1 unearned run and striking out 2. Garret Harpole closed it out with a scoreless 7th.
Ross Corbin started for Corvallis and took the loss. Garret Miller came on in the 6th in relief. Jordan Brown was 2 - 3 and scored both of the Spartans' runs. Kellen Sparks got on base 3 out of 4 trips to the plate with 2 walks and a base hit. The Register-Guard

North Medford pounded out 19 hits at Swede earlier this week. I"m wondering if they left their bats behind for North Eugene as the Highlander's pounded out 15 hits tonight.
Garret Harpole doubled with two outs in the first to score Luke Ferrenburg. Garret Mills then singled to set up a two out, two run 350 foot triple by Kyle DeHaven to put North Eugene up 3-0 after 1.
Jonny Lari lead off the second with a 350 foot homer over the Papa Pizza sing in left center. Nice sound effect as the ball landed on the shed behind the fence and the outfielder thought the ball had hit the sign and was still somewhere on the field.
Erik Long picked up an rbi in the third by singling in Mills.
DeHaven got his third rbi of the game in the fourth with a single to complete the scoring.
Andrew Moore sturck out 11 in six innings. Chris Clayton came in in the 7th and got one K. North ended the game on a nice third to second to first double play.
North Eugene will be rewarded for the victory by travelling to number one rated Corvallis next Tuesday.
The Highlanders became the first MWL team to advance past the sub round and get to the round of sixteen since the creation of the 5A classification. They join Thurston and Springfield, who earned the automatic Sweet Sixteen seeds.

Ashland, ranked #3 in state, got to starter Kameron Bates for three runs in the top of the first and it could have been a lot more.
Springfield managed to tag Oregon State letter of intent signer Ian Kendall for a run in the bottom of the first to make it 3-1, with Ashland in the lead. Neither team scored in the second inning.
The Miller's Trevor Mathison lined a shot off of Kendall's arm to open the third for Springfield. Mathison's hit got the Miller bats going and they scored three off of the 90 mph Kendall to go up 4-3 after three.
Alex Camarena made a nice catch in left off of Ashland's leadoff batter in the top of the fourth. The batter hit a screamer that was tailing towards the third base line, but the speedy Camarenea ran it down.
Ashland changed pitchers in the bottom of the fourth. Mathison again started the Miller's offense with a shot to left field with one out. Mathison eventually scored to make it 5-3 after four full innings.
Ashland threatened in the top of the fifth with a deep liner to dead center for a double. Bates got the next batter on a skyscraper pop up, then a grounder to third and K'd the final batter. Bates was done after five full and left the game with a 5-3 lead.
Jordan VanEngers got the call to close the game. Ashland picked up a run to pull within 5-4. But Springfield answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth for a 6-4 lead. VanEngers quickly got two outs and then tried to make the Ashland starter feel better by tossing a waist high fast ball. Kendall sent it onto Pioneer Parkway to pull Ashland to within one, 6-5. VanEngers then went back to work and got the final out.
Good tuneup game for the playoffs for both teams. Both teams worked their key pitchers and both teams hit the ball hard. The Register-Guard

North rallied for 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th but came up short as West Albany won 5 - 4 in this non-league "tune-up" game before the upcoming playoffs. North actually outhit w. Albany, 10 hits to 7. W. Albany got their first run by pulling off a delayed double steal with a steal of home in the first. They added another that inning, and got 3 in the fourth, 2 of which were unearned. North rallied with 3 runs in the 7th with 2 hits, 2 hit batters, and a sac fly but left the tying run on third. They also had an opportunity in the third for more. Luke Ferenberg doubled, Andrew Moore doubled him in and then Garret Harpole's single put runners on the corners with no one out. But then a pop-out and a double play ended the inning without any more runs scored.
For North, Kyle DeHaven went the first 4 innings. Garret Harpole pitched the last 3 and allowed no hits and 1 walk. Luke Ferenberg was 3 - 4 with a double and 2 runs scored. Andrew Moore was 2 - 3 with a double, run scored and an RBI. Garret Harpole was 2 - 3 with a run scored. Jonny Lari had a long opposite field double off the left field fence.
For W. Albany, Taylor Burner started; Jacob Stizel went the middle 4 innings , and Cody James pitched the 7th. Burner also had 2 hits, a runs scored, and a stolen base.

Hitting clinic put on by North Medford as they batted .475 as a team for the game. Collin Sowers led off the game with a home run for North Medford. Seth Brown was 3 - 5. Brady Shipley and Cody James each had 2 RBIs.
Andrew Moore and Eric Long each had 2 hits for North. A bonus was watching the Black Tornado shortstop. He played with his heels on the outfield grass and made two plays behind the third baseman and one behind second where he back hand flipped the ball to second for the force.
Michael Bradshaw went the distance for North Medford.
North Eugene spread out the workload among three pitchers. Each pitcher completed their assigned innings in a tuneup for the playoffs.
Goal of Midwestern League High School Baseball Web Site
The goal of the Midwestern League baseball site is to recognize the efforts of all high school baseball players in our league.
Coaches, parents, booster club members, statisticians, photographers and announcers all contribute to the web site as a way to help recognize our student - athletes.
It is a well known fact in education that students who participate in extracurricular activity in high school graduate at a higher rate than those students who do not participate. I feel strongly that recognizing baseball players efforts via write-ups, stats, and photos helps keep these student - athletes engaged in the sport.
A fun part of the web site is following baseball tradition. North Eugene has long been a state powerhouse in baseball, but many people don't know that South Eugene owns two state baseball championships. (A long time ago, when the school was known as Eugene High School and North Eugene High did not exist.)
If you have some baseball history you would like to share, please contact me using the "Contact Us" link in the menu at the top of the page. I am particularly interested in:
old photos, old team stat sheets, all stars, all league, all state and summer state all star game players players who went on to play in college or pros (minors or bigs)MWL players who have baseball cards (minors or bigs)team win and loss records, with scores would be even better. old scorebooks up in the attic
Did you know that Marshfield and South Eugene played a district baseball playoff game that featured two Axemen who were drafted by the Yankees and two Pirates who went on to triple A ball?
Did you know that a Churchill Lancer was the first Duck player of the modern baseball era to hit a home run at the new PK park at the University of Oregon?
Did you know that a current assistant coach in the MWL was the head coach of two different MWL school's that went to the state quarter finals in the old 80 team 4A classification? Let's not lose that history.
Here's another...What do Hurricane Katrina and MWL grad Mickey Loomis, a member of Willamette's 1974 league championship team, have in common? They both spent a good portion of their adult life in New Orleans. Loomis is the General Manager of the Saints. More MWL NFL players here.
I'd like to thank all of those who have helped with emailing or texting scores on game nights, writing articles, and those who have sent in photos and stats. I've logged a lot of doubles, triples, home runs, earned runs and more over the years. I'm sure it is rewarding for the players.
Finally, thanks to all of the coaches for being supportive. I try to stay out of their way, but I do take up some of their time asking for rosters and stats and permission to shoot photos from dangerous locations.
One of these years I hope I can travel with one of the teams to Arizona or Nevada for one of the spring break tournaments. Traveling long distances is a little bonus of baseball that helps our kids see the world and grow up faster. Less philosophically, Arizona is about the sunshine. In the future, I'd like to add more information about baseball camps, training techniques and programs like SPARQS, scholarships and more about the next level - junior colleges, universities, minor league and major league baseball. But for now, my hands are full just keeping up with the regular season.
Good Luck Everyone!
