Springfield   3 Thurston   2       Incredible game featuring two macho pitching performances, batters who wouldn't go down swinging, and a half hours worth of ESPN defensive plays
The winning run came in the top of the tenth when Springfield's Austin Haxby, batting 8th in the order, hit a sharp single to center to score Blaine Dudley from second on a close play at the plate.
With Tyler Johnson on crutches and unavailable to pitch for Thurston, freshman Kyle Watson got the call. Two fielding errors in the first opened the door for Ollie Johnson to score Springfield's first run.
Watson started the second by walking Haxby, who later scored on a single by Ryan Helfrich to give Springfield a 2-0 lead. Thurston was fortunate not to be down more as the Milers left five men stranded in the first two innings. But that was the kind of game it was on both sides. Pure guts. Watson then went on to record seven scoreless innings against the Millers. Seven innings is normally a complete game!
Springfield ace Kameron Bates held the Colts scoreless in the first two innings and looked like he was going to dominate the game as he recorded two strike outs and had the Colts hitting shallow fly balls to the outfield. But the Colts toughened up at the plate and Bates only struck out two more through the seventh inning.
The first Colt run came in the third when Dawson Phinney singled, stole second and scored from second on a Kyle Wright sacrifice bunt. The Colts tied the game in the fourth. Anthony Havens singled to right, Jordan Loos moved him to second with a sac bunt. Watson flew out, but Jarren Goddard stroked a single and scored Havens.
Springfield lost it's offensive momentum after the first two innings and only had two more hits through the seventh inning as Watson dialed in from the mound. Now it was Thurston's turn to try and win the game. There had already been several very good defensive plays, but now was the time for spectacular plays.
With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Thurston's Goddard blasts a 390 shot to the base of the fence in dead center for a stand up double. Then he steals third. The noose is tightening around Springfield. With the infield in, Colt Erin Hoover hits a fairly hard hit ball that goes gets past the third baseman, but heads to the shortstop, who has no choice to field and throw to the plate on the run. Goddard dives around the catcher but , Springfield's catcher Austin Haxby applies the sweep tag for the out. Wow.
Thurston's turn to show off defensively. Dudley opens the Miller's eighth with a single to left center. Whitney flies out. Brandon Hubbard hits a long fly ball to left that looks like it's drifting out, but Colt Jordan Loos tracks it down and snags it with his back hitting the fence.
Springfield's Bates tries to make young Miller coach Eric Lansdon go bald by walking the leadoff batter. But Bates bears down and K's two batters.
The top of the ninth was mano -a- mano time. Frosh Watson got two outs while giving up two singles, bringing opposing pitcher junior Kameron Bates to the plate. This is story book stuff. And it is... Mighty Casey strikes out with a full stroke at the ball.
Now it's Springfield's turn. Specifically, Ollie Johnson. Joey Urness opens the Thurston ninth with a single. Jordan Loos comes to the plate for Thurston and hits a soft liner to center. Out of nowhere, Ollie J, comes flying like Superman and snags the ball. But wait, there's more. Urness safely gets back to first. Bates works on making coach Lansdon bald some more and walks Watson to put runners on first and second, making Urness the tieing run with one out. Goddard comes to the plate and loft a soft liner over the third baseman's head, but Superman Ollie J comes out of nowhere again and makes a flying, diving catch for out number two. Nobody in the stadium thought Johnson had a chance, including Urness, who was off to score the tieing run. Ollie J fired the ball to second to end the inning.
Thurston makes a pitching change in the top of the tenth. Dudley singles to open the inning for Springfield. Whitney flies out to right. Brandon Hubbard gets on via an error. Haxby then gets the winning RBI single. The excitement isn't over.
Hoover leads off and gets on first. The next batter lays down a potential sac bunt, but it's straight back to Bates, who fires a strike to second. Kyle Wright came to the plate next and took some mighty cuts, but Bates sat him down for the second out. It was great seeing these football players go at it. Bates got Tyler Dumilieu to fly to right to end the game.
Hats off to the players and coaches. A Thurston win would have put the teams back into a tie. There was a lot of pressure and the kids put on quite a show. We don't get to see both teams leave it all on the field very often. Tonight was the night. The Register Guard

Thurston   1 N Eugene   3       Andrew Moore tossed a complete game 5 hitter. Moore K'd 13 Colts and walked 3. Thurston struggled at the plate with the only solid hits coming in the sixth. The first solid hit was a single by frosh Kyle Watson. Then Jarren Goddard drove in Watson with a deep double. The lead off spot was the only position not to get struck out by Moore. Tyler Dumileu, an ex Highlander, worked Moore for a walk in the third and scratched out two infield singles in the 5th and 7th. Thurston's Tyler Johnson was batting 7th and singled in the third for the Colts first hit. But Johnson was injured and left the game on a double play attempt in the bottom of the third. Moore K'd Johnson's replacement.
Thurston's Dawson Phinney pitched a game equal to Moore's, but was undone by infield errors. Phinney K'd 5 in five innings and walked none. Jordan Loos came on in relief in the sixth and K'd two Highlanders.
North's first two runs came with one out in the second. An infield error left Luke Ferrenberg on first. Nathan Jones moved Ferrenberg to third with a single. Chris Clayton singled in Ferrenberg. Then Eric Long had a nice double to left to score Jones.
Garret Harpole led off North's third inning with a single. Phinney K'd the next batter, but another infield error put North runner's on first and second with one out. Ferrenberg then hit a grounder that Tyler Johnson tried to turn into a double play. Johnson made the play at second, but Johnson took a tumble over the North runner who was sliding into second. Johnson wisely held the ball as a throw certainly would have gone wild. Not throwing the ball kept Ferrenberg at first, but Harpole was able to make home on the play. Johnson was helped off the field by his teammates. He was given a nice hand by the fans, well deserved especially after he had made a cross field throw from behind the third baseman earlier in the inning that nearly got Harpole at first.

Thurston   2 Springfield   6

Springfield bats started warming up in the third with two back to back singes, but they were still down 2-0 when their fourth inning at bats arrived. Kameron Bates led off the fourth with a single and Blaine Dudley smashed a towering two run homer to left.
In the 5th, singles by Ryan Helfrich and Bates were followed by a walk to Dudley to load the bases. Cody Whitney then hit a one out sac fly to right to score Helfrich. Luke Blackwell singled in Bates.
Springfield's Trevor Mathison worked starting pitcher Dawson Phinney for a walk to start the Miller 6th. Olliver Johnson then launched a two run dinger to left to give the Millers a 6-2 lead after six.
Earlier in the third inning, Thurston jumped to a 1-0 lead when Zach Kopczenski hit a too hot to handle drive to 3rd. Phinney moved Kop to second on a sac bunt. Austin Parrett singled in Kopczenski for the first run of the game. Bates got the next two batters to end the inning.
Thurston's Peanut Havens worked Bates for a walk in the top of the fourth. With one out Tyler Johnson doubled in Peanut for a 2-0 lead. Then Johnson advanced to third on a passed ball. A possible game changing play followed with Johnson at third and one out. Jarren Goddard hit a dart to shallow right center. Springfield's Trevor Mathison seemingly had no chance to get to the ball, but he got close, dove, the ball disappeared, and Mathison rolled over and showed the ball to the ump who called the play an out. The speedy Johnson, seeing no quick call by the ump as the ump waited to see the ball, took off for home. Mathison doubled up Johnson at third to end the inning after a long discussion between coach Dube and the ump. The ump won.
Thurston loaded the bases in the top of the fifth with two outs. Peanut came up with the wind blowing due south, so everyone was thinking grand salami, except Bates. Peanut hit a sharp grounder to Helfrich at third for the third out.
Both Bates and Phinney competed the game. My unofficial stats are
Bates: 7 innings, 2 runs (both earned), 4 hits, 4 K's, 2 walks.
Phinney: 6 innings, 6 runs (all earned), 12 hits, , 4 k's, 2 walks.

North Eugene   3 Thurston   4   Sophomore Andrew Moore started for North and Frosh Kyle Watson started for Thurston.
Thurston won the game in the bottom of the 8th. Tylor Dumilieu stroked a 365 double to center with no outs and no one on. Peanut Havens, who had a double in the 5th, then lined a single to right, scoring Dumilieu.
The Colts used their speed in the first to take a 2-0 lead. Dumilieu hit a 160 foot double, that's not a typo, behind first base. After Moore got his second K of the first inning, Loos launched a 60 foot single. Again no typo. Dumilieu later scored on an passed ball. Moore got Watson for Moore's third K of the inning, but Watson got to first when the ball wasn't cleanly caught. A double steal scored Loos from third.
North Eugene took the lead in the third. Two consecutive walks with two outs set up Garrett Harpole's 345 foot three run homer to left.
Thurston answered in the bottom of the third when Dumilieu reached second on an infield error. He moved to third on a Havens ground out. Loos knocked him in with a ground out to second.
The score remained tied through five. Both starting pitchers left the game after five full innings. Moore had K'd 8, Watson had k'd 4.
Thurston's Tyler Johnson got six straight outs in the six and seventh, three via K's. North's Chris Clayton also retired all six batters in the 6th and 7th, including 2 k's. North got a runner to first with two outs in the 8th to no avail.
North Eugene played without senor Garrett Mills - shoulder injury and soph Dillon Hudson - broken arm. Hudson is out for the year. Hopefully, Mills will return to complete his senior year. Of course, North has been playing without Shawn Boehm all year.

Dawson Phinney goes all the way for the Colts, giving up just 5 hits. Phinney K'd 2 and walked 4. The 2-3-4 hitters for Churchill were 1 for 11. Thurston put it away in the fifth with four straight singles off of Lancer starter Sam Kiesse. The third consecutive single was by Zach Kopczenski, who picked up two rbi's on that stroke. The string of singles ended when Austin Parrett laid down a sac bunt to move Thurston runners to second and third. Then Kyle Wright laid down a perfect bunt on a one out suicide that scored Tyler Johnson and speedy Kopczenski all the way from second.
Johnson and Kopczenski were involved in dual larceny earlier in the game. In the second inning, with Johnson on third and Kop on first, Kop was 'picked off' first. He sauntered to second. Johnson beat the throw home, Kop got second and scored on a throwing error two batters later.
In the sixth, Jarren Goddard followed frosh Kyle Watson's double, with a 380 foot blast (double) to dead center to knock in the Colts 10th and final run. Colt rbi's: Kopczenski 2, Wright 2, Havens 2, Loos, Goddard.
