Thurston Captures 2nd Seed in MWL Colts Return 5 starters in 2011: 2010 PRE - LEAGUE Ten Thurston seniors were all league last year, so graduation has emptied the Colt dugout of seasoned varsity players. Yes, Thurston had great seasons last year at the sub varsity level, but it's not the same as varsity ball. How will coach Dube get a bunch of new varsity players ready for the MWL? Thurston will take on at least three 6A teams, including Sheldon and South Eugene. Add Pleasant Hill and powerhouse Marist, mix in a four game tourney at Crater and coach Dube will find out if his all new team is ready to compete for a playoff spot in the MWL. LEAGUE Thurston opens the defense of thier league title at North Eugene. The Colts swept the Highlanders last year, so this is a must see game for MWL fans as it will set the tone for these teams. Following the North game, Springfield visits Thurston. The Millers are expected to be much stronger this year. Keep in mind that Springfield beat the Colts once last year, only one of two 5A teams to do so. The Colts also get Willamette and Churchill at home the first and third rounds. That gives Thurston one of the more favorable schedules in league.
PLAYERS (from Feb 15 Way Too Early Prediction) The defending state champs graduated 10 MWL all leaguers. Not good enough for you? Five were all state and one got drafted. Obviously, they don't have any all leaguers returning. Anthony Havens and Kyle Wright represent last year's varsity for the Colts. The Colts picked up Tyler Dumiieu from North. A few others got to see some high caliber ball as the Colts carried 7 non seniors during the playoff run when they bumped up to a 19 man roster. This is the year 5A Coach of the Year, Phil Dube, earns his stipend. 2009 Thurston All Leaguers Returning: Also: |
