| N Eugene | 3 | K Union | 2 | North played small ball and got a great pitching performance from Andrew Moore to beat the Klamath Union Pelicans 3 - 2. Moore struck out 16 batters in his complete game effort, and had a string of 7 consecutive strikeouts. He allowed 5 hits and walked 2.
North scored a run in the 1st without a hit. Ryan Delaney and Moore drew walks, Garrett Harpole was hit by a pitch to load he bases,and the Garrett Mills was also hit by a pitch to drive in the run.
In the 2nd, Jonny Lari led off with a walk, was sacrificed to 2nd by Chris Clayton, took 3rd on a wild pitch, and scored on an RBI single by Delaney. The Pelicans tied it in the 6th on a long 2 run double by Alden Goebel. North got out of the inning when the next batter Donavin Weiser grounded out unassisted to Clayton at first, who then threw to third to get Goebel. He beat the throw but slid past the bag and was tagged out to complete the double play. North went ahead in the top of the 7th. Moore walked and then with 2 outs, Garrett Mills hit a ball that was knocked down by the pitcher Justin Chavarria. Mills beat it out for an infield hit and the throw got away for an error, allowing Moore to score. Moore then struck out the side in the 7th to end the game. Garrett Harpole was 2 - 3 with a double for North.
KU's Justin Chavarria pitched a complete game as well. He only yielded 5 hits, but walked 5 and hit 3 batters. Only 2 of the runs he gave up were earned. He also had 2 hits and a stolen base in the game. . The Register Guard |

| N Eugene | 13 | Corvallis | 2 | In a game delayed over an hour by rain, North Eugene defeated the Corvallis Spartans 13 - 2. North had 11 hits, and both of Corvallis' runs were unearned. North jumped out in front with 5 runs in the second with RBI hits from Ryan Delaney, Luke Ferrenberg, and Andrew Moore. Corvallis got 1 back in the 3rd with an RBI single from Corey Ingland after a NEHS error on a potential double play ball. Corvallis got another run in the 5th on an RBI single by Kellen Sparks, but the run was unearned as a passed ball had advanced the runners into scoring position. North then put the game away with 4 runs in the 6th and 4 more in the 7th. Kyle DeHaven and Ryan Delaney both had 2 run doubles in the 6th inning. In the 7th, Jonny Lari had a bases loaded 2 run double off the wall in left field that missed clearing the wall for a grand slam by a few feet. Joe Lindley and Ryan Delaney added RBI singles. Delaney was 3 - 4 with a double, a walk, and 4 RBIs. Garret Harpole had a double and 2 runs scored. Kyle DeHaven was 2 - 3 with a double, a walk, 2 RBIs, and 3 runs scored. Jonny Lari had a double, a walk, a run scored, and 2 RBIs. On the mound for North, Garret Mills went the first 4 innings for the win, giving up 2 hits, 1 run (0 earned), and striking out 6. Chris Clayton pitched the next 2 innings, giving up 1 unearned run and striking out 2. Garret Harpole closed it out with a scoreless 7th. Ross Corbin started for Corvallis and took the loss. Garret Miller came on in the 6th in relief. Jordan Brown was 2 - 3 and scored both of the Spartans' runs. Kellen Sparks got on base 3 out of 4 trips to the plate with 2 walks and a base hit. | Dalles-Wah | 0 | North Eugene | 6 | North Medford pounded out 19 hits at Swede earlier this week. I"m wondering if they left their bats behind for North Eugene as the Highlander's pounded out 15 hits tonight. Garret Harpole doubled with two outs in the first to score Luke Ferrenburg. Garret Mills then singled to set up a two out, two run 350 foot triple by Kyle DeHaven to put North Eugene up 3-0 after 1. Jonny Lari lead off the second with a 350 foot homer over the Papa Pizza sing in left center. Nice sound effect as the ball landed on the shed behind the fence and the outfielder thought the ball had hit the sign and was still somewhere on the field. Erik Long picked up an rbi in the third by singling in Mills. DeHaven got his third rbi of the game in the fourth with a single to complete the scoring. Andrew Moore sturck out 11 in six innings. Chris Clayton came in in the 7th and got one K. North ended the game on a nice third to second to first double play. North Eugene will be rewarded for the victory by travelling to number one rated Corvallis next Tuesday. The Highlanders became the first MWL team to advance past the sub round and get to the round of sixteen since the creation of the 5A classification. They join Thurston and Springfield, who earned the automatic Sweet Sixteen seeds. |

North rallied for 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th but came up short as West Albany won 5 - 4 in this non-league "tune-up" game before the upcoming playoffs. North actually outhit w. Albany, 10 hits to 7. W. Albany got their first run by pulling off a delayed double steal with a steal of home in the first. They added another that inning, and got 3 in the fourth, 2 of which were unearned. North rallied with 3 runs in the 7th with 2 hits, 2 hit batters, and a sac fly but left the tying run on third. They also had an opportunity in the third for more. Luke Ferenberg doubled, Andrew Moore doubled him in and then Garret Harpole's single put runners on the corners with no one out. But then a pop-out and a double play ended the inning without any more runs scored. For North, Kyle DeHaven went the first 4 innings. Garret Harpole pitched the last 3 and allowed no hits and 1 walk. Luke Ferenberg was 3 - 4 with a double and 2 runs scored. Andrew Moore was 2 - 3 with a double, run scored and an RBI. Garret Harpole was 2 - 3 with a run scored. Jonny Lari had a long opposite field double off the left field fence. For W. Albany, Taylor Burner started; Jacob Stizel went the middle 4 innings , and Cody James pitched the 7th. | N Medford | 11 | N Eugene | 0 | Hitting clinic put on by North Medford as they batted .475 as a team for the game. Collin Sowers led off the game with a home run for North Medford. Seth Brown was 3 - 5. Brady Shipley and Cody James each had 2 RBIs. Andrew Moore and Erik Long each had 2 hits for North. A bonus was watching the Black Tornado shortstop. He played with his heels on the outfield grass and made two plays behind the third baseman and one behind second where he back hand flipped the ball to second for the force. Michael Bradshaw went the distance for North Medford. North Eugene spread out the workload among three pitchers. Each pitcher completed their assigned innings in a tuneup for the playoffs. |

| Willamette | 3 | N Eugene | 7 | Andrew Moore and Koleton WIlliams both went the distance for North and Willamette respectively as North came out on top 7 - 3. The game was pretty tight the whole way until North scored 3 in the bottom of the sixth, 2 on Garrett Mills' opposite field double. Mills was 3 - 4 with 3 RBIs and a stolen base on the day. Besides pitching the entire game, Moore was 3 - 4 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBIs. Luke Ferenberg had a double and an RBI. For Willamette , Scott Kuvas was 2 - 3 with a double, 2 runs scored and a delayed steal of home. Jake Hughes was 2 - 3 with an RBI and a double. North was able to take advantage of 3 Willamette errors, as 3 of the 7 runs they scored were unearned. On the mound, Moore went 7 innings, giving up just 2 earned runs, 5 hits, and striking out 6. | N Eugene | 2 | Churchill | 4 | Another hard fought game between Churchill and North ended up with Churchill on top 4 - 2, despite North outhitting them with 10 hits to Churchill's 8. Nathan Rheuban went 6 innings and scattered 8 hits while walking only 1 and striking out 2. Brad Birch pitched the 7th to earn a save.
Garrett Mills started for North and went 4 2/3 innings, giving up 2 runs on 5 hits walking only 1 and striking out 1. Kyle DeHaven relieved and was tagged for the loss as he gave up 2 runs in the bottom of the sixth. Churchill scored first in the 1st with a familiar formula - Alex Priaulx got on base with an infield hit, stole second, advanced to third on another infield hit, and scored on a balk. Mills then helped himself out of the inning when he made a nice play on a grounder and threw to catcher Jonny Lari to get Sam Kiesse at home.
North answered in the second when Luke Ferenberg scored all the way from first on Kyle DeHaven's single. In the third North loaded the bases with one out, but only got one run on Ferenberg's sac fly. The next batter, DeHaven, smashed a hard liner that was caught by third baseman Spencer Jorgensen for the third out. Churchill then tied it in the third on a solo home run by Brad Birch. In the 6th, Churchill had 3 straight hits with Ben Straka getting an RBI single, followed by Dylan Pomeroy's sac fly to go ahead 4 - 2. North got the potential tying runs on in the 7th, but Birch got Ferenberg to ground out to end the game. Ryan Delaney, Andrew Moore, Garrett Harpole, and Luke Ferenberg all had 2 hits each for North. Alex Priaulx was 2 - 3 with 2 infield hits, a run scored and a stolen base for Churchill. Brad Birch also had 2 hits, including his home run. |

| N Eugene | 3 | Churchill | 3 | North and Churchill played to a 3 - 3 tie through 9 innings. There was a rain delay in the middle of the game, and then eventually the game was stopped due to darkness.
Kyle DeHaven started for North ad went the first 3 1/3 innings, giving up 3 runs in the third. Chris Clayton pitched the rest of the game, shutting out Churchill for 5 2/3 innings. He gave up only 2 hits, both infield singles, and struck out 4.
Spencer Jorgensen stared for Churchill and went 5 2/3 innings and gave up North's 3 runs. Nathan Ruben came on to face Garrett Harpole with the bases loaded and 2 outs in the 6th and got a big strikeout for Churchill. Sam Kiesse pitched the last 3 and retired all 9 batters he faced. Garret Mills, Garret Harpole, and Luke Ferenberg had RBIs for North. Alex Priaux was 2 - 3 with a run scored for Churchill. Priaulx and Lancer Jack Lively were the only players on either team to have more than 1 hit in the game. Brad Birch and Sam Kiesse had RBI doubles for Churchill, and Ben Straka drive in Churchill's other run. The 2 teams will play again either 5/11 or 5/13. |

| N Eugene | 1 | Springfield | 0 | North came out on top 1 - 0 in a tough pitcher's duel between North's Andrew Moore and Springfield's Jordan Van Engers. Both pitcher's went the full 7 innings.
Moore got the shutout win, allowing only 4 hits while walking 1, hitting 1, and striking out 5. He's allowed just one earned run in his last 16 innings pitched. He also went 3 - 3 (now with 6 hits in his last 6 at bats) and drove in the only run of the game. VanEngers was nearly as good, allowing 1 run on 8 hits, 0 walks, and 5 strikeouts. Cody Whitney doubled for Springfield with 2 outs in the 7th to put the tying run in scoring position, but Moore got Brandon Hubbard to fly out to end the game. On defense, both teams turned in 2 double plays each. For North, Kyle DeHaven went 2 - 3 with a double. Erik Long went 3 - 3 (Now with 8 hits in his last 8 official at bats) with a double and scored the only run of the game. | Marshfield | 0 | N Eugene | 8 | Kyle De Haven yielded only 1 hit over 6 shutout innings, and North Eugene took advantage of 2 costly Marshfield errors en route to an 8 - 0 win. Marshfield looked like they were going to break the scoreless time in the third. After a Josh Perkins single, a walk, and a balk put runners on second and third with nobody out, Ryan Campbell hit a hard liner to the right side that looked like a sure base hit; but Andrew Moore made great diving catch of the line drive and threw to second to double off Tyler Johnson. Marshfield would get only 1 more baserunner on an infield hit the rest of the game. They did come up with some good defensive plays, picking off Erik Long twice - a back pick by catcher Raymond Jones, and a good pickoff move by pitcher Kane Rowley. Garrett Mills got NEHS on the board with a solo home run leading off the fourth. They added 2 more unearned runs after a 2 base error in the outfield, and 3 more in the 5th, 2 of which scored on Marshfield's second outfield 2 base error. Andrew Moore was 3 - 4 with 2 runs scored, Garrett Harpole was 3 - 4 with a triple and 2 RBIs, Erik Long was 3 - 3 with 2 RBIs and a stellar defensive play, and Jonny Lari had a double and 2 runs scored. | Thurston | 1 | N Eugene | 3 | Andrew Moore tossed a complete game 5 hitter. Moore K'd 13 Colts and walked 3. Thurston struggled at the plate with the only solid hits coming in the sixth. The first solid hit was a single by frosh Kyle Watson. Then Jarren Goddard drove in Watson with a deep double. The lead off spot was the only position not to get struck out by Moore. Tyler Dumileu, an ex Highlander, worked Moore for a walk in the third and scratched out two infield singles in the 5th and 7th. Thurston's Tyler Johnson was batting 7th and singled in the third for the Colts first hit. But Johnson was injured and left the game on a double play attempt in the bottom of the third. Moore K'd Johnson's replacement. Thurston's Dawson Phinney pitched a game equal to Moore's, but was undone by infield errors. Phinney K'd 5 in five innings and walked none. Jordan Loos came on in relief in the sixth and K'd two Highlanders. North's first two runs came with one out in the second. An infield error left Luke Ferrenberg on first. Nathan Jones moved Ferrenberg to third with a single. Chris Clayton singled in Ferrenberg. Then Erik Long had a nice double to left to score Jones. Garret Harpole led off North's third inning with a single. Phinney K'd the next batter, but another infield error put North runner's on first and second with one out. Ferrenberg then hit a grounder that Tyler Johnson tried to turn into a double play. Johnson made the play at second, but Johnson took a tumble over the North runner who was sliding into second. Johnson wisely held the ball as a throw certainly would have gone wild. Not throwing the ball kept Ferrenberg at first, but Harpole was able to make home on the play. Johnson was helped off the field by his teammates. He was given a nice hand by the fans, well deserved especially after he had made a cross field throw from behind the third baseman earlier in the inning that nearly got Harpole at first. |

| N Eugene | 2 | Willamette | 4 | Willamette scored 3 runs in the fourth with the help of 3 bunts to win 4 - 2. North had a 2 - 0 lead after an RBI single by Andrew Moore in the 2nd and an rbi double by Kyle DeHaven in the 3rd. They might have had more opportunities, but were cut down on the base paths. Willamette catcher Dustin Leber threw out Ryan Delaney trying to steal second base in the 1st, after which North loaded the bases but couldn't score; then Leber got DeHaven trying to steal third in the 3rd. The third Highlander caught in the game occurred when Wolverine pitcher Tony Svensen picked Nathan Jones off first in the 2nd. Willamette got an unearned run on the 3rd on Scott Kuvaas's RBI single that was set up by a walk and throwing error. Then in the 4th, Jordan Bowman reached on a bunt that couldn't be handled by third baseman Joe Lindley that was ruled a hit. After another bunt base hit, Jake Hughes drove one into the gap for a base clearing 3 run double. Moore pitched a 6 inning complete game in the losing effort, giving up four hits, striking out 6 and walking 2. Moore tried to close the gap in the top of the 7th with a line drive to the warning track in deep center, but Wolverine Jordan Bowman made one of many excellent catches. Tony Svensen started for Willamette yielding 5 walks in 2+innings; Trent Wagner came on and did a superb job in relief for the win, giving up only 2 hits, 1 walk, and striking out 5. | Churchill | 0 | North Eugene | 1 | North only managed one unearned run on 2 hits, but it was enough in this pitcher's duel to win 1 - 0. Nathan Jones scored the only run after getting a base hit, moving to second on an error, to third on a sac bunt, and scoring on Andrew Moore's RBI ground out. Kyle DeHaven pitched 6 innings for the win, giving up 3 hits, 3 walks, and striking out 3. Andrew Moore closed it out for the save with 2 strikeouts. Spencer Jorgensen pitched a very strong game for Churchill, yielding only 1 unearned run on 2 hits while walking only 1 and striking out 5. The game was also marked by a number of excellent defensive plays. Moore was robbed of a double on a diving stop by Churchill's third baseman Anthony Simpson in the first inning. Moore then made a nice play on a hard hit ball by Brad Birch with a runner on third in the 3rd. NEHS catcher Jonny Lari nailed Anthony Simpson trying to steal with a nice throw in the 4th. NEHS CF Luke Ferenberg made a nice play on a sinking liner hit by Spencer Jorgensen in the 6th. Churchill shortstop Ben Straka made an outstanding play to get North's leadoff hitter in the sixth. After Jorgensen issued his only walk of the game to Moore, Daniel Weyers took an extra base hit away from Garret Harpole with a fine grab of a long drive in the 6th. Churchill had a few opportunities.... Churchill's Sam Kiesse was stranded on second in the first inning after he doubled down the line. DeHaven walked two in a row with one out in the second, but got out of the jam with a strike out and flyout. The best chance for the Lancers to score came in the third inning. Alex Priaulx doubled with one out. Kiesse hit a sac fly to right, moving Priaulx to third with two outs. Moore than made the nice play mentioned above. It went like this...Clean up hitter Brad Birch hit a screamer at second baseman Moore. The ball was moving at warp speed, low to the ground and going to take a hop somewhere in front of Moore. With no time to think, Moore stuck his glove where he hoped it would hop, and bingo, he stabbed it on one bounce and got Birch for the third out. Clayton was 1st batter of the 6th for North and hit a solo HR and that got the Highlander bats going, 7 of their 8 hits came in the final 2 innings. Kyle DeHaven started for North and picks up the win, 6 1/3 innings 3 hits, 0 runs, 4 BB's and 8 K's. Garret Harpole closes, 2/3 innings giving up 1 hit. Ryan Delaney 2B and 2 RBI's, Andrew Moore 1 RBI, Garret Harpole 2B and 1 RBI, Luke Ferrenburg 2 for 3 with 2 RBI and 3 SB's, , Chris Clayton HR (RBI). Raymond Jones gets start for the Pirates, and up until the sixth inning, had only given up one. hit. For the game he went 6 innings, gave up 3 hits , 3 runs, 3 BB's and had 1 K. Ryan Campbell threw 1 inning in relief giving up 5 hits and 5 runs, 1 BB and had 2 K's. Both teams third basemen, Harpole of North, Cambell of Marshfield and Pirate shortstop turned in some nice defenensive plays. | North Eugene | 3 | Thurston | 4 | Sophomore Andrew Moore started for North and Frosh Kyle Watson started for Thurston. Thurston won the game in the bottom of the 8th. Tylor Dumilieu stroked a 365 double to center with no outs and no one on. Peanut Havens, who had a double in the 5th, then lined a single to right, scoring Dumilieu. The Colts used their speed in the first to take a 2-0 lead. Dumilieu hit a 160 foot double, that's not a typo, behind first base. After Moore got his second K of the first inning, Loos launched a 60 foot single. Again no typo. Dumilieu later scored on an passed ball. Moore got Watson for Moore's third K of the inning, but Watson got to first when the ball wasn't cleanly caught. A double steal scored Loos from third. North Eugene took the lead in the third. Two consecutive walks with two outs set up Garrett Harpole's 345 foot three run homer to left. Thurston answered in the bottom of the third when Dumilieu reached second on an infield error. He moved to third on a Havens ground out. Loos knocked him in with a ground out to second. The score remained tied through five. Both starting pitchers left the game after five full innings. Moore had K'd 8, Watson had k'd 4. Thurston's Tyler Johnson got six straight outs in the six and seventh, three via K's. North's Chris Clayton also retired all six batters in the 6th and 7th, including 2 k's. North got a runner to first with two outs in the 8th to no avail. North Eugene played without senor Garrett Mills - shoulder injury and soph Dillon Hudson - broken arm. Hudson is out for the year. Hopefully, Mills will return to complete his senior year. The Colts used their speed in the first to take a 2-0 lead. Dumilieu hit a 160 foot double, that's not a typo, behind first base. After Moore got his second K of the first inning, Loos launched a 60 foot single. Again no typo. Dumilieu later scored on an passed ball. Moore got Watson for Moore's third K of the inning, but Watson got to first when the ball wasn't cleanly caught. A double steal scored Loos from third. North Eugene took the lead in the third. Two consecutive walks with two outs set up Garrett Harpole's 345 foot three run homer to left. Thurston answered in the bottom of the third when Dumilieu reached second on an infield error. He moved to third on a Havens ground out. Loos knocked him in with a ground out to second. The score remained tied through five. Both starting pitchers left the game after five full innings. Moore had K'd 8, Watson had k'd 4. Thurston's Tyler Johnson got six straight outs in the six and seventh, three via K's. North's Chris Clayton also retired all six batters in the 6th and 7th, including 2 k's. North got a runner to first with two outs in the 8th to no avail. North Eugene played without senor Garrett Mills - shoulder injury and soph Dillon Hudson - broken arm. Hudson is out for the year. Hopefully, Mills will return to complete his senior year. North's Ryan Delaney broke up Brandon's perfect game in the fourth with a lead off infield hit to second. Brandon threw a double play pitch to the next batter, Garrett Mills, but after the out at second the ball went into the stands. Harpole got the lone North rbi to tie it 1-1.. Brandon drove in Marist's first run in the top of the fourth with a perfect sac bunt. Marist tried another delayed suicide in the 5th, but North turned it into a double play. Here's how it went.... With 1 out and a man on third, J. Weilbrenner tried to bunt with 2 strikes. Kyle DeHaven fielded the ball, got the runner on third in a pickle, threw to G. Harpole for the out, and then Harpole threw to Mills at second to get Weilbrenner trying to go from first to second. Marist's number nine hitter led off the sixth with a shot down the line for a double. The next batter flew out, then a K, then two more fly outs.... hmnn, that's four outs, but the K got on base, buying Marist enough time to score the go ahead winning run on a PB/WP. Not sure how it was scored in the book. Moore singed in the sixth with one out. Another infield error by Marist put men on first and second with North down 2-1. Harpole hit a solid grounder, but Marist turned it perfectly this time to end the inning. Kyle DeHaven had a nice liner to get on base in the bottom of the seventh with one out, but a fly ball and a looking K ended the game. Great game with great pitching on both sides, aggressive batters, small ball, and tough double plays. |

A killer schedule, sure to battle harden the Highlanders.
North Eugene opens with cross town rival South Eugene. The game is at Swede and should be a good one. They quickly follow the Axemen game with another home game against last year's state runner-up, Corvallis. The pre-league schedule doesn't get any easier with trips to North Medford and a four game tourney in Idaho. A game at South will be followed by home games against probably the toughest team in the area, Marist; perennial power Sheldon; and a last home game against the Black Tornado.
LEAGUE
North Eugene begins league with a home game against the Colts. Last year the Highlanders opened at Thurston in a game that ended in a 1-1 tie after nine innings. The game had to be played over in its entirety. The Colts went on to sweep the Highlanders. With two home games against the Colts, North hopes to take the series.
The Highlanders have to go on the road twice against both the Millers and the Lancers. These series will be great games and seating is tight at Churchill and Springfield, so start thinking about your seating strategy now.
2010 RETURNING PLAYERS (from Feb 15 Way Too Early Prediction)
North finished second in league last year with just two seniors. The Highlanders lost Keller and Haxby to graduation and Dumileu moved to Thurston.
The Highlanders were light at the plate last year, but I have to believe that a lot of that was due to being so young. There's a lot of growth that goes on after the frosh and soph years. That means Andrew Moore (soph this year), Kyle DeHaven and Shaun Boehm (juniors now) will certainly be stronger. Seniors Alex Crum (a solid linebacker in the fall), Luke Ferrnburg and Garrett Mills will have other hitters around them this year, making them more productive at the plate.
Overall, expect the Highlanders to have strong pitching, their usual excellent D, and a much better season at the plate. They might give Churchill a battle for the title. But they can't just focus on the Lancers. Willamette and Springfield are looking good this year, and both teams could sneak by North if the Highlanders bats stay quiet again this year. Don't count on silent Highlander bats, I can hear the pings right now from my house.....
Possible problems: Pitcher Moore getting a late start due to his role on the Highlander basketball playoff team. And Shaun Boehm is questionable after knee surgery in the late fall.
