   Cheap! The sun wasn't out

South Eugene pulled off a triple play in the top of the fourth to get out of the inning without being scored upon. Still, an inning later the Axemen fell behind 6-2. The Axemen pulled to within 6-4 after six when Spencer Dunlap stroked a double to knock in Max Morrison. Dunlap scored later on a Summit error.
South's 5-2, 135 pound frosh, Isaiah Stolp came in to relieve in the top of the 7th and looked like superman for two batters. Two pitches into the third batter he hurt his elbow while throwing and removed himself from the game. Kai Delap entered, walked a couple of batters, than got a force to end the inning.
South was still down 6-4 in the bottom of the 7th. Jimmy Grossman doubled with one out, which was followed by a walk to Gus Craig. Sophomore Joe Schindler came to the plate as clean up hitter and cleared the bases with a deep triple. Morrison was intentionally walked to put men on first and third. The strategy paid off as Summit turned a double play to end the 7th in a 6-6 tie.
South hit the first batter in the top of the 8th. But after a strike out and force out, Max Morrison took the mound for the second time in the game and got the final out.
Summit returned the 'hit batter' favor by plunking the first South batter in the bottom of the 8th. The runner stole second, which surprised coach VanMeer. Cameron Jack singled to put the winning run on third. Ben Giland then stepped to the plate and ripped a liner to right. The right field made a dive for the ball, gloved it, rolled over his mitt and came to his feet with the ball on the ground. Game over.
The triple play was a work of art. With the bases loaded and no outs in the 4th inning, Summit's #5 hitter lined a shot towards center fielder Gus Craig. Craig caught it for out number one, crow hopped and threw to catcher BenG (Ben Giland) who tagged a Summitteer for out number two. BenG fired it to Joe Schindler, who along with Spencer Dunlap trapped another Summiteer between second and third. Dunlap flipped it back to Schindler for the third out. Wow! From potential disaster for the Axemen to cheers.

2010 Record:
    League    2-13
    Overall     8-17

PRE - LEAGUE
South Eugene comes off of a disappointing 2010 season and opens with a non-league game against Churchill. Other earlly games area against Crater and Astoria. A math against the Black Tornado is certain to get the Axemen's attention.

LEAGUE
2011 isn't a year you want to be rebuilding a program, but the Axemen have a schedule where they might do well if they can find one outstanding pitcher. They don't have any game sequences where they face veteran laced clubs one after another.
They might be able to plan around the Big Dogs, steal a few of their bones once in awhile, and end up in the upper half at the end of season.
The Axemen might also benefit from not playing a lot of out of state teams. Their RPI could look good compared to other teams in the league that are headed to warmer weather for spring break.
