The Churchill Lancers and Sheldon Irish opened the 2nd half of league play with a game that looked a lot like the 1st game they played 3 weeks ago at Sheldon. Jake Lessel and Cason Cunningham dominated the hitters in the 1st few innings with Lessel sailing through the 1st 4 innings allowing no hits, no runs, with 5 K's and only 2 walks.
Cunningham also allowed no runs through 4 innings, allowing only a 2 out single to Devin Murray in the 3rd and he had 6 strikeouts and only 1 BB through four.
In the top of the 5th Dylan Lewis leads off with a clean single to left to break up Lessel's no-hitter. Andrew Leung puts down a nice sac bunt that moves Lewis to 2nd. Lessel walks the next 2 batters to load the bases with only 1 out and the top of the order coming up. Land hits a ground ball to 1st that is bobbled and no throw is made and the Irish take the lead 1-0. Dan Herr hits a ground ball to the 2nd baseman and he gets the force at 2nd, but makes a poor throw to 1st that allows a 2nd run to score on the play. Lessel bears down and K's the next hitter to get out of the inning trailing 3-0. The Irish score 3 runs on 1 hit, 2 walks and 2 costly Churchill errors.

The Lancers bounce back in the bottom of the 5th when Jordan Thompson hits a bloop 2B that lands just inside the line in right field. Brandon Doerksen follows with a sharp single to left to put runners on 1st and 3rd with nobody out. Kyler Wallis puts down a nice bunt that scores Thompson and moves Doerksen to 2nd. Skyler Perales lines a single to left that moves Doerksen to 3rd and Murray hits a fly to center that scores Doerksen pulling the Lancers within a run. Cunningham gets a pop fly to 1st to get out of the inning with Sheldon still on top 3-2.
In the 6th inning Mitchell Lewis draws a one out walk and moves to 2nd on a wild pitch. He scores from 2nd when his twin brother Dylan lines his 2nd hit of the game into right field. Lessel gets a ground ball to 3rd and a strikeout to end the inning. In the bottom of the 6th Jacob DeZarn gets that run back for the Lancers when he rips a drive over the center field fence for a solo HR. After Cunningham throws one ball to Bryson Jones he is replaced on the mound by Brett Nielsen and gets out of the inning after allowing a 2 out hit to Thompson and we head to the 7th with the Irish still on top 4-3.

Lessel works a quick 7th inning getting 2 K's and Devin Murray makes a real nice play on a bunt by Dan Herr to retire the side. It looks like the Lancers will go quietly when Nielsen retires the 1st 2 batters in the inning, but Murray gives the Lancers some hope when he lines a single into right center field. Murray moves to 2nd on a wild pitch, and on to 3rd when Pomeroy strikes out, but reaches 1st when the ball in the dirt gets away from the catcher. Chase Kearney hits the 1st pitch from Nielsen sharply up the middle and the 2nd baseman is able to knock it down but he can't make a play and the tying run scores and Pomeroy moves to 2nd. With a 1-1 count on DeZarn the pitcher tries to pick Kearney off 1st and throws wildly past the bag. Pomeroy takes off from 2nd and he scores easily and the Lancers have another big victory over the top team in the league 5-4. Lessel gets the complete game victory, allowing only 2 hits, 4 runs, (only 2 earned) with 9 K's and 5 BB's. Dylan Lewis was 2 for 3 with 1 RBI for the Irish. Devin Murray was 2 for 2 with a run scored and a sac fly, Jordan Thompson was 2 for 3 with a run scored and Jake DeZarn was 1 for 3 with that solo HR for the Lancers The Lancers outhit the Irish 8-2

2010 Record:
    League    5-10
    Overall     8-16

PRE - LEAGUE
Stan Manley returns to Sheldon as head coach. He'll be leading his charges to Arizona after playing Grants Pass and McMinnville. Sheldon had a rough 2010 in the Southwest Conference and hopes ot make a comeback this year.
They'll have to find some pitching while on their road trip.

LEAGUE
Sheldon opens league with two teams that will be sending a lot of new varsity players onto the field - Churchill and Marshfield. After that it's brutal each week.
Sheldon will probably be happy if they can get out of the first round with three or four wins, while showing improvement under their new coach. If they can accomplish that, they could turn the tables on everyone the second round and be in a good position for the playoffs.
