Sheldon   3

Sheldon beat Crater in a non-league contest 3-0 at Tom Bowen field with another great pitching performance following Cason Cunningham's no hitter in Arizona.
Brett Nielsen threw five no hit innings of his own, striking out six while issuing only two walks.  Taylor Alie got the save, pitching the final two innings giving up a lone ground ball single that was promptly erased by a double play.  Crater never threatened, never having a runner reach second base.
Sheldon scored in the first inning after Senior Second baseman, Cody Walker walked.  Cooper Stiles reached on a fielder's choice with Walker moving to third on a throwing error.  Nielsen grounded out to second, scoring Walker.
The Irish struck again in the 2nd inning as Dylan Lewis singled to lead off the inning.  Andrew Leung reached on an error.  Sophomore, Mitch Lewis singled, scoring his brother Dylan.  JJ McMahon also singled in the inning before Walker singled scoring Mitch Lewis, giving Sheldon a 3-0 lead it never relinquished.
Walker was 2-2 with an rbi to lead Sheldon offensively.  Ryan Land also singled for Sheldon.
The Irish open league play on Friday at Tom Bowen field against Churchill.

Below is a Sheldon JV game report from Coach Brian Vogel.

Date: 3/28-2011
Sheldon JV beat Crater today 10-6. It was a great first game for the team.  It was entire team effort pitching and hitting.
Ivan Faulhaber threw 4 innings giving up 3 runs on 4 hits.  Ivan struck out 4  while walking 3 batters and had 7 ground ball outs.  Tony Tokatly finished the game by throwing the last three innings, giving up three runs and striking out 3.
The Irish scored 10 runs on 5 hits. The Irish had a 6 run second inning lead by Tony Tokatly's Grand Slam home run.  Justin Brabham had the play of the game with an amazing diving catch that ended the 4th inning with 2 Crater runners on base. Tony Tokatly was 2-3 with a HR and 5 RBI.  Ivan Faulhaber was 1-2 with a HR.  Justin Brabham and Spencer Clark also had RBI's for the Irish. Tyler Osborne had 2 stolen bases.
Catcher, Wyatt Swick was very solid behind the plate and the Irish ended the game with great defense in the 7th inning.  Actually, let me rephrase: Ben Olssen played amazing defense for the Irish in the 7th inning.  He recorded all three outs in the 7th inning by playing solid defense and making three perfect throws to end the game.
      Great job Irish!

Pueblo County    0
Sheldon             10

Good Evening Irish fans,

Sheldon ended its spring baseball break in Arizona in impressive fashion as Cason Cunningham tossed a five inning no-hitter in 10-0 victory over Pueblo County, Colorado.  Cunningham struck out 13 batters while walking only two in a dominating performance.

The Irish took the lead early when Ryan Land lead off the bottom of the first inning with a triple.  Cooper Stiles drove him in with a hard ground-out to second base.

In the second inning, Sheldon broke the game open scoring seven runs.  Cunningham led off the inning with a double, going to third on a throwing error by the right fielder.  Dylan Lewis scored Cunningham and reached base on another error, this one by the second baseman.  Consecutive singles by Andrew Leung and Cody Walker brought JJ McMahon to the plate, who promptly rapped a two run single.  Land walked and Mitch Lewis reached on a fielder's choice as McMahon was thrown out at the plate.  Stiles added a two-run single to stake and Brett Nielsen doubled to stake the Irish to an 8-0 lead.

Sheldon scored two more runs in the 4th inning when with two outs Stiles and Nielsen singled.  After Cunningham was hit by a pitch Dylan Lewis singled to drive in the last two runs.

With the score 10-0 heading to the top of the fifth, Cunningham struck out the side to end the game due to the ten run rule.

Sheldon returns home on Monday, March 28th to host Crater at 4:00pm.

In the bottom of the seventh the Irish threatened when Cunningham singled and Dylan Lewis walked.  Walker's sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third, but Heritage was able to record the final two outs to preserve the victory.

Sheldon moved to 2-0 on the season with a ten inning win over the Cavemen.
This was a typical early season game with lots of walks, strikeouts, errors, fouled third strike bunts, popped up bunts for double plays. It was oh-so-suitable that this game ended with a wild pitch scoring the winning run.
The lads from Irishtown did show some grit by slowly chipping away at a third inning 6-1 deficit. Sheldon tied the game in the bottom of the sixth with two runs, only to see the Cavemen take the lead 7-6 in the top of the 7th. The never say die Irish scratched out a run in the bottom half to tie it.
Both teams had opportunities to set up great scoring situations in extra innings, but each team took themselves out of the situation with botched bunts.
Grants Pass seemingly put the game away with 3 runs in the top of the 10th, but the Irish heart was still beating on St. Patricks Day and they scored the winning run with two outs on a wild pitch.
I'd tell you who did what, but I was late to the game and didn't get a roster.

In the second, Ivan Faulhaber walked to start the inning. After stealing second, he advanced to third on dropped third strike as the catcher threw to 1st for the out. He scored on Cameron Herr's infeld single. JJ McMahon then drew a walk, setting the stage for Land's rbi double.
That was it for the Irish until the 7th inning when Dylan Lewis got on with a walk. he went to second on a wild pitch and was moved to third by Sean Bellotti. Lewis scored when McMahon reached on an error.
Sheldon's pitching was solid. Cunningham struck out eight batters in his three innings of work while Alie fanned three. Ryan Land pitched the seventh inning also striking out a batter. 2010 Record:
    League    5-10
    Overall     8-16

PRE - LEAGUE
Stan Manley returns to Sheldon as head coach. He'll be leading his charges to Arizona after playing Grants Pass and McMinnville. Sheldon had a rough 2010 in the Southwest Conference and hopes ot make a comeback this year.
They'll have to find some pitching while on their road trip.

LEAGUE
Sheldon opens league with two teams that will be sending a lot of new varsity players onto the field - Churchill and Marshfield. After that it's brutal each week.
Sheldon will probably be happy if they can get out of the first round with three or four wins, while showing improvement under their new coach. If they can accomplish that, they could turn the tables on everyone the second round and be in a good position for the playoffs.
