     2011 Recap

A young Sheldon team was in a four way battle for the league championship late in the regular season before finishing two games out of first place. The Irish advanced to the state playoffs where they beat the Barlow Bruins 7-0 before losing to eventual state champions Westview 3-0. The Irish were the only team to hold Westview to 3 runs or less in the playoffs.
Sheldon graduates three outstanding all league players; Cason Cunningham, Andrew Leung and Dan Herr. Sheldon returns two first team all leaguers, Ryan Land and Dylan Lewis along with second team player Cooper Stiles. Left handed pitcher, Brett Nielsen, who shut down the state champions, Westview, has two more years left.

Sheldon's season was ended last night by Westview as the Wildcats made three first inning runs stand up beating the Irish 3-0. The game was moved to Jesuit's turf field due to rainy weather in the area.
In the first inning Westview's lead-off batter doubled with a fly ball that sliced away from the fielder. Phil Belding had an rbi single and eventually scored on a ground ball out. Ryan Susnow then hit a fly ball to the shortest part of the park for a home run which was to be the last of the scoring on the evening.
Carson Kelly of Westview struck out 12 and scattered five hits as Sheldon was unable to string hits together. Ryan Land had a double, and Dan, Herr, Cody Walker, Andrew Lueng and Cason Cunningham each singled in the ball game.
Brett Nielsen was outstanding for Sheldon. Nielsen gave up seven hits, struck out four and walked only one batter in the contest.
I am very proud of our players this year. Once we get in to post season play there will be only one team that ends its season smiling. We did compete very hard last night, and we faced a very good pitcher, who had a very good night. What I was most proud of is that we did not roll over after a bit of adversity in the first inning. We got tough right back.

Thanks to our Seniors again, Cason Cunningham, Daniel Herr, Andrew Leung, JJ McMahon and Cody Walker. These guys did lead the way in showing our younger players how to work hard and how to compete. I also want to thank our coaching staff for the outstanding work they did this season. Jim Fryback, Quentin Harley, Jim Rise, Tyler Martell were awesome for the Varsity this year.

Gary's notes:
Sheldon graduates key starters in Cason Cunningham, Daniel Herr, Andrew Leung and Cody Walker. The Irish return first team outfielder Ryan Land, first team utility (catcher) Dylan Lewis and HM 3B/SS Cooper Stiles. Of the two other starters today, sophomore Brett Nielsen will be counted on for major mound duty next year and Cameron Herr will be back in the infield. Several other Irish players got significant varsity playing time this year.  Looking at next year, the Colts have the jump on the Irish, but the Irish are loaded with returning talent and a good summer could move the Irish ahead.

"Ryan! Doubles and Triples? We need
some home runs next game."

Cason Cunningham struck out 17, going seven innings for the complete game shut-out win in a 7-0 victory over Barlow in the first round of the State Play-offs. Cunningham was dominant throughout and was able to totally stifle the Bruins on Sheldon's home field.

Sheldon scored in four of the six innings they hit beginning in the bottom of the first. Ryan Land led off the game with a triple and scored when Dan Herr reached on an error. After Herr was thrown out stealing, Brett Nielsen hit a towering home run over the center field fence to give Sheldon a 2-0 lead. In the third with one out, Dan Herr walked and Cooper Stiles reached on an error. Nielsen got on base with a fielders choice, giving the Irish runners at first and third. Cunningham lined a single to left, scoring Herr while on the play Nielsen scored on a throwing error, and Sheldon Led four to nothing.

With one out in the fourth, pinch hitter, Kaleb Stubbs was hit by a pitch and Land promptly double off the left field wall. Herr singled up the middle, scoring both Stubbs and Land. In the bottom of the fifth, Dylan Lewis doubled and Andrew Leung singled. Leung stole second and then Cameron Herr was walked to load the bases. Cody Walker hit a sacrifice fly to give Sheldon their seventh and final run.

Land was 2-3 with a double and a triple and Leung was also 2-3. Nielsen, Dylan Lewis, Dan Herr and Cunnigham also had hits for Sheldon.

The Irish will travel to Westview on Wednesday for a second round match-up.

Cason Cunningham blows by Redmond
in Sheldon's 11-1 victory

Sheldon beats Redmond 11-1 to gain a spot in OSAA State play-offs that begin Monday May 23rd.

Redmond scored an unearned run in the 1st inning to take a quick lead, but that was all they could muster as Cason Cunningham struck out nine while giving up just one hit and walking only two in the victory.

In the 2nd inning the Irish scored all they would need. Dylan Lewis led off with a walk and Andrew Leung doubled him home with a drive off the wall in right center field. Cody Walker walked and Gaje McDaniel laid down a perfect bunt for his first Varsity base hit. With the bases loaded, Ryan Land was hit by a pitch scoring Leung and Daniel Herr followed with a sacrifice fly scoring Walker. After a Cooper Stiles infield single, McDaniel scored Sheldon's fourth run on a fielders choice when Redmond's 1st baseman made a diving stop of a Brett Nielsen ground ball.

Sheldon put the game away in the 4th inning. After two quick outs, Nielsen double off the wall in right field and Cunningham walked and Nielsen advanced on a wild pitch and scored on the back half of a double steal. Lewis also was walked and Redmond made a pitching change. Leung greeted the new Panther hurler with his second double of the game. After Walker reached on a base on balls, McDaniel doubled to left field, clearing the bases. Land and Herr were hit by pitches loading the bases again. Stiles walked, scoring McDaniel and then a wild pitch allowed Land to score giving the Irish their winning margin. Sheldon scored seven runs in the inning all with two outs.

Leung was 3/3 with two doubles, McDaniel was 2/2 with three rbi and Stiles and Nielsen each had two hits to pace the Irish offense.

Coach Stan Manley
2011 1st year this time around

2010 Record:
    League    5-10
    Overall     8-16

PRE - LEAGUE
Stan Manley returns to Sheldon as head coach. He'll be leading his charges to Arizona after playing Grants Pass and McMinnville. Sheldon had a rough 2010 in the Southwest Conference and hopes ot make a comeback this year.
They'll have to find some pitching while on their road trip.

LEAGUE
Sheldon opens league with two teams that will be sending a lot of new varsity players onto the field - Churchill and Marshfield. After that it's brutal each week.
Sheldon will probably be happy if they can get out of the first round with three or four wins, while showing improvement under their new coach. If they can accomplish that, they could turn the tables on everyone the second round and be in a good position for the playoffs.
