Sheldon beat Springfield 4-2 tonight in a league game running their record to 4-0.  As visitors in their own park, Sheldon defeated the Millers at Sheldon as Springfield's field was ruled unplayable.
Ryan Land kept up his torrid hitting pace leading of the game with a triple to right field and scoring the games first run on a wild pitch.  Springfield answered in the bottom half when TR Ralston hit a double and scored on Blaine Dudley's fielders choice.
In the second inning the Millers took the lead when Taylor Travis singled in Garrett Helfrich.  The game stayed at 2-1 until the top of five.
Dylan Lewis singled to start the inning.  Andrew Leung sacrificed Lewis to second.  Cody Walker singled to put runners on the corners.  Mitch Lewis grounded to first with Dylan Lewis thrown out at the plate. With two outs, Land hit his second triple of the game driving home both Walker and Mitch Lewis.  Daniel Herr followed with a single driving home Land to give the Irish a 4-2 lead.
Sheldon replaced starter Taylor Alie in the bottom of the fifth inning with Brett Nielsen, and Nielsen was dominant.  Nielsen faced nine batters in his three innings of work, striking out six.
Alie gave up just two runs in getting his first win as a Varsity pitcher.  Land was 2-4 with two triples to pace Sheldon.
The Irish host South Eugene on Monday at 5:00.  Sheldon is 4-0 in League play and 8-4 overall.

Springfield's center fielder made it worth the fans admission (okay, it was free), by making two stellar plays in the fourth. The first was a diving catch of a Nielsen liner. And the next was a sprint to deep center to snag a certain double or triple by Cason Cunningham. Travess was a gold glove today.

The Wolverines came out swinging today as each starter had at least one hit in a 8-3 victory over Churchill.  Willamette evened their record at 2-2 pounding out 16 hits.
Trent Waggoner led the Wolverines going 3-4 while junior Zach Selby was 2-3 with 3 RBI.  Cole Hathaway, Ryan Concannon, Darrin Gorder and Dustin Leber each had two hits.
Starter Darrin Gorder looked good early until hit got hit by a line drive and then became inconsistant.  Concannon came in with the bases loaded and it only took one pitch to get the Wolverines out of a jam in the fourth.
Dezarn had half of Churchill's hits going 3-3 with a walk while Murray, Doerksen and Perales each had a hit in the loss.

Andrew Moore threw his second no hitter within the week; striking out 15, walking two with one other runner reaching base on an infield error. Amazingly, no South Eugene batter put the ball in the air. The five outs that were not strike outs, were grounders to third (2), second (2) and first (1). That means four Axemen never touched the ball. Moore threw 99 pitches in total.
South was in the game until the Axemen defense fell apart in the sixth. The Axemen were down 2-0, easily within striking distance if they could work a little small ball. But three South errors on routine plays opened the door for North to score four runs. The errors dampened an otherwise stellar performance by sophomore Joe Schindler. Schindler had North off balance most of the game, striking out six and walking only two. Schindler is one of the better pitchers I"ve seen this year.
Shawn Boehm was four for four and an rbi. Garrett Harpole ripped a deep double in the top of the fourth, knocking in Boehm to start North's scoring. Kyle DeHaven then knocked him in.
Notably, Gus Craig did not play for South Eugene. And North almost lost catcher Kyle DeHaven when he lost a battle with the first base bag while trying to beat out a single, stumbled 10 yards and came up holding his knee. The trainer checked him out, North put in a sub runner, and DeHaven returned the following inning.
North Eugene has a bye tomorrow. South takes on the Colts.

Sheldon 4 Thurston 2
Sheldon beat Thurston 4-2 tonight in a good pitcher's battle between Sheldon's Cason Cunningham and Thurston's Tyler Johnson.  Cunningham went 6 2/3 innings, striking out 10 while giving up just three hits.  Johnson went six innings, striking out seven.
The Irish scored in the first inning as Senior Daniel Herr singled and moved to second on a wild pitch.  Cooper Stiles doubled to right center driving in Herr to give Sheldon an early lead.  Thurston tied the score in the third when Stephan Drake hit a solo Home-Run.
In the fourth inning the Colts took a 2-1 lead when the Irish committed two errors, scoring without the benefit of a hit.
But Sheldon came back in the bottom of the inning.  Cason Cunningham led off with a single.  Andrew Leung singled and Mitch Lewis walked to load the bases.  With two outs Ryan Land singled scoring both Cunningham and Leung to give the Irish a lead they wouldn't give back.  Sheldon added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Leung reached on an error.  Sean Bellotti running for Leung was sacrificed to second.  Daniel Herr drove Bellotti home with his second single of the evening.
Land was 2/3 with two rbi and Daniel Herr was 2/4 with an rbi.
Sheldon takes on Springfield tomorrow in a game scheduled at Hamlin Middle School.

Jerry Rouleau started for Marist and retired the first three Churchill batters.
After a few walks and a single from Will Swindling, Marist had the bases loaded but Churchill’s pitcher, Jake Lessel came back and struck out the next three batters in a row coming out of the inning giving up only one run.

At the top of the second inning, Bryson Jones launched a monster solo homer over the center field fence. A batter later, Chase Kearney hit a double and scored on a fielder’s choice from Devin Murray – Churchill was ahead 2-1 at the top of the second inning.   The score remained the same for the next couple of innings. At the top of the fifth inning, Skyler Perales started off the inning with a single up the middle and just like the percentages show that if your lead off hitter gets on base, there is a good percent that that batter/runner will score.    Marist had a pitching change mid-inning  and finished giving up only one run. Churchill led 3-1 at the top of the 5th inning.
Then Marist started catching up with Will Swindling getting walked, Jake Britt hitting a single moving Swindling to second and Austin Baird following with a fielder’s choice moving Swindling to third. Zach Eyster hit a single scoring Swindling, then Ryan Inouye hit another single scoring pinch runner Levi Yarborough for Baird. Now the score is tied 3-3 and the momentum in Marist’s favor.   The next six Churchill batters were retired in the sixth and seventh innings by Will Barlett who got the save. In the bottom of the seventh inning Austin Baird singled and then Zach Eyster lined a walk-off double which takes a weird bounce off the left field fence pole scoring pinch runner Alex Torres for the 4-3 Marist come back win.

Churchill's recap

Churchill and Marist locked up in a tense Midwestern league game on Thursday afternoon and the Spartans prevailed when Zach Eyster hit a walk off 2B in the bottom of the 7th to drive in pinch runner Alex Torres from 1st base giving the Spartans a 4-3 victory.  Austin Baird led off the bottom of the inning with a base hit to left and Eyster hit the next pitch to the fence in left center and it hit a pole in the fence and bounced away from the left fielder allowing Torres to score all the way from 1st.
Marist struck 1st in the bottom of the 1st inning when Churchill starter Jake Lessel walked the 1st 2 batters, gave up a 1B to Will Swindling and then threw a wild pitch that allowed in the 1st run and then walked Jake Britt to load the bases back up.  At that point Lessel found the strike zone and struck out the 5,6 7 hitters in succession to get out of the inning.
In the top of the 2nd Bryson Jones took a 2-2 pitch from Jerry Roleau and hit it about 400' to straight away center field, a monster blast about 50' over the fence that tied the game at 1.  Chase Kearney followed with a 2B down the left field line and he eventually scored on a fielders choice by Devin Murray.
The score stayed 2-1 Churchill until the top of the 5th as Lessel mowed down the Spartans.  He struck out the side in the 2nd, allowed a walk and a 1B with two more K's in the 3rd, and he had a 1-2-3 4th inning with 2 more K's.  Through 4 innings he had 10 strikeouts.
In the top of the 5th the Lancers added another run and had the bases loaded with 2 out and were threatening to break it open.  However, relief pitcher Will Bartlett was able to induce a ground ball to short for the force out at 2nd to end the threat.
Lessel began to tire in the 5th as his pitch count approached 100 and the Spartans were able to score 2 runs to tie it up with 3 singles and a walk.  Devin Murray replaced Lessel on the mound with one out and two on. He induced a force out at 2nd for the 2nd out of the inning.  However, two out RBI singles by Eyster and Inoyue tied the score.  At that point the game remained scoreless until the bottom of the 7th when the Spartans scored the game winner.

The Wolverines cut the score to 3-1 when Zach Selby doubled and eventually scored on a pass ed ball in the second.
The Millers scored two in the fourth and one more in the fifth to take a 6-1 lead.
Willamette's bats came alive and scored five runs on 3 hits, 2 walks and a hit batter before Blaine Dudley came in to close the door.  Cole Hathaway had a RBI double, Jalen Drath had a 2-run single and Trent Waggoner hit a 2-run double to tie the score for Willamette in the fifth.
Both teams were held scoreless in the sixth and Springfield scratched a run across in the seventh which proved to be the winning run.
Dudley picked up the win for the Millers holding the Wolverines scoreless during his 2 2/3 innings of relief.  Bates hit a one out double to center over the outstretched arms of Hathaway and then he advanced to third on a deep fly ball to right.  Helfrich then hit a double to right-center to score Bates.

Kevin Haskin and Zach Eyster combined for a three hit, 6-4 win over Willamette. The Wolverines rallied late but to no avail.
Marist got on the board first in the second inning with a little small ball.. Ryan Inouye stroked a single to open the inning then stole second. Jerry Rouleau moved Inouye to third with a fielder's choice. Then Will Bartlett laid down a sac bunt to score Inouye.
Marist's big inning came in the third. Logan Silver led off with a single. Bennett Chiongbiong cleared Silver off the bases with a triple. Will Swindling's double scored Chiongbiong and Jake Britt hit a sac fly to center to score Swindling to make it 4-0.
Willamette immediately answered in the top of the 4th.    Trent Waggoner walked with one out. The next batter struck out to set the stage for a two out rally. Zach Selby was then hit by a pitch. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Tyler Peterson then walked and Darek Vetter singled in Waggoner and Selby to pull Willamette within 4-2.
In the bottom of the 5th, Austin Baird singled in Chiongbiong to put Marist up 5-2 after five. Haskin had struck out five batters to that point and worked himself out of a three walk jam in the third.
But Willamette was about to rally.
Marist's Haskins got the lead off batter in the sixth before walking Darren Gorder. Gorder eventually scored on a passed ball. Zach Selby followed Gorder with a single and then Tyler Petersen knocked Selby in to bring the Wolverines within 5-4, with one out. Eyster entered the game and got two quick outs. Eyster closed the door in the top of the 7th with a 1-2-3 inning against the top of the order, ending the game with a strike out.
Both teams were a little rough around the edges, with several base running errors and a couple of errors on routine catches or plays. The pitchers weren't overpowering today and their walk/HP's came in bunches which resulted in runs during those innings. But both teams fought through their problems and never let an inning blow up. The difference today was the Marist bats being a little more powerful.

Marshfield      2

Sheldon got the bats going this afternoon in Coos Bay defeating Marshfield 16-2.
The Irish got going right away when Ryan Land walked, stole second and came home on a Cooper Stiles rbi single.  Brett Nielsen reached base on a fielders choice as Stiles beat the throw to second.  With two outs, Dylan Lewis doubled home Stiles and Andrew Leung singled to bring home Nielsen and Lewis to give Sheldon a 4-0 lead.
Marshfield scored once in the bottom of the inning, but Sheldon came back in the top of the second on a two-out solo home-run from Daniel Herr.
In the fourth inning the Irish broke the game open, scoring seven runs in the frame.  JJ McMahon led off with a single, Land singled and Daniel Herr drove in both with a two run single.  A walk to Stiles was followed by hits from Nielsen, Cason Cunningham and Dylan Lewis third hit of the game. After Leung walked, Cameron Herr hit a sacrifice fly and Land singled again to cap the inning.
Sheldon wasn't finished.  In the top of the fifth the Irish scored four more runs with both Ivan Faulhaber and Cameron Herr having key hits in the inning.
Dylan Lewis was 3-3 with a double and a triple, Daniel Herr was 2-3 with a home run and Ryan Land was 2-3.  On the mound Brett Nielsen went four innings, giving up two runs and striking out eight.
The Irish are 6-4 on the season and 2-0 in league play.  Sheldon takes on Thurston Wednesday afternoon at 5:00 pm at Tom Bowen field.  Sheldon Hall of Honor inductee, Fred Hauck will throw out the first pitch.
The following update is from the Saturday jv game between Sheldon and Churchill from Coach Vogel.

Last Saturday the Sheldon JV baseball team beat Churchill 11-1 in 5 innings.  Tony Tokatly pitched the entire game giving up three hits and allowing only 1 run.  The Irish played great defense all day long and backed that up with 15 hits.  Gaje McDaniel was 4-4 with two RBI. Ivan Faulhaber was 1-2 with a triple. Tyler Osborne and Taylor Alie each had 2 hits and 3 stolen bases
The Irish are now 2-0 and play Thurston on Thursday 4.7.11 at Thurston High School at 5pm.  We are scheduled to take a school bus to the game at 3:15pm.This is only a 1 way bus.  It will not be bringing the team back.   Are there any parents that would be willing to drive some of the boys to the game so we wouldn't have to take a school bus?
Also, we are looking to make Saturday's game against springfield a double header.  Game time starts at 12 and 2pm.

South Eugene defeated Churchill in 6 innings on Monday night 16-4.  The 1st 2 innings were scoreless as the Lancers squandered a good scoring chance in the bottom of the 2nd when they put two on with nobody out and failed to score.  The first base runner was the pitcher Brandon Doerksen who was hit by a pitch in the back of the neck and left the game after pitching the top of the 3rd.
South scored 3 runs in the 3rd on 4 hits a walk and 2 Churchill errors.  The key hit was a 2 run 2B by Max Morrison.  In the top of the 5th the Axemen scored 4 more runs on 2 hits 2 walks and another costly Churchill error.
The Lancers finally got on the board in the bottom of the 5th when they strung together 3 hits by Murray, Kearney, and Pomeroy and with the help of a wild pitch plated 2 runs.
However, in the top of the 6th the Axemen sent 13 batters to the plate and scored 9 more runs, only 1 of which was earned due to a 2 out throwing error that would have ended the inning after only 1 run was scored.  South took advantage of that miscue to pile up 5 more hits and a couple of walks to finish off the inning.
The Lancers did come back to score 2 more runs in the 6th thanks to a solo HR by Bryson Jones and an RBI single by Murray.
Carlos Larson went the distance for South allowing 6 hits 4 runs, all earned, 4 K's 1 BB and 3 Hit batters

Moore tosses no-no. 13 K's.
Faces minimum possible batters.
One ball leaves infield.

WIll you let me put North back into the number one spot? Not only did Moore perform at his peak, but North showed some power early in the season. Power was something that was missing last year.
There was a good crowd on hand for the match up tonight. Both pitchers started strong. Moore striking out the 4-5-6 hitters in the top of the 2nd. Thurston's Aaron Clift K'd two in the first two innings and the only ball to get out of the infield off of Clift those two innings was a harmless fly to right.
Moore k'd two more in the third. Clift walked Ryan Delaney to lead off the third. Clift then k'd the next batter, then watched Thurston turn the first of two double plays - Smith to Kopinski to Watson. Zero - Zero after three, and I'm having flashbacks to a 10 inning 1-1 tie at Thuston a couple of years ago.
Moore fanned two more before Jarren Goddard hit the only ball of the day by a Colt out of the infield - a fly out to right. Goddard was also the only Colt not to strike out today.
Moore singled to open the bottom of the fourth, But Shawn Boehm hit into a double play and it looked like we were heading into a scoreless fifth, but..... the phone just rang. I have to go meet my wife for dinner....back in an hour.  Garrett Harpole lined a shot down the third base line for a single. Kyle DeHaven then ripped it to deep center field for a 380 foot double, knocking in Harpole. Big Cat then hit a slow roller to second, but the fielder couldn't gather for the quick throw to first, allowing DeHaven to cross the plate to put North up 2-0. Clift got out of the inning with his fourth K.
Moore got out of the 5th quickly after a nice double play. Clift walked the first batter in the 6th. Pinch hitter Dustin Howell then succesfully sac bunted, which is cause for North's coach Nicholsen to celebrate. (It took about 15 attempts last year to lay down the first North sac bunt). Clift got the second out with a K. Moore then worked Clift for a walk. Shawn Boehm then hit the ball 335 feet to left, where the fence is 325. The three run dinger made it 5-0 North.
It was time to sit back and watch Moore cruise on home. He K'd three more in the sixth. Then he K'd the first batter in the 7th to make it five in a row. Thurston's Aaron Hoover then hit a big bouncer to third... when the ball finally came down it took a mercury quick and very low bounce which Harople snagged and realizing a no-no was on the line, rushed the throw to first - on the button for the second out. Harpole then collected a sky high pop up by Goddard for the final out.
The Highlanders have to be happy as Thurston will be tough this year, but North realizes they only had five hits. The Colts defense was great as expected, and they aren't likely to see a performance like Moore had from any other team.
Thurston's Clift fanned five in five innings. Just three balls got out of the infield, but two of them were killers. Look for good things this year from Clift and three more years - he's a FROSH!

Jake Lessel from Churchill and Cason Cunningham from Sheldon locked up in a pitchers duel at Sheldon HS on Friday afternoon. Cunningham and the Irish prevailed 3-1.
Cunningham went the distance allowing only 2 hits, striking out 9, walking 3 and hitting 3 batters.  Lessel went 5.3 innings allowing 5 hits, 3 runs, only 2 earned while striking out 9, walking 5 and hitting 1 batter.
Sheldon scored 1st in the bottom of the 2nd inning on a 1 out 2B by Cunningham and an error by the left fielder allowed him to go to 3rd.  A strike out and a walk put runners on 1st and 3rd with 2 out and the Irish pulled off a double steal to plate the 1st run.  The Irish scored again in the 3rd, when Ryan Land singled with one out, took 2nd on a balk.  After Lessel struck out Cody Walker for his 8th strikeout of the game, Cooper Stiles pops a fly ball into shallow right field that just lands in fair territory out of the reach of three Churchill players that scores Land and puts Stiles on 2nd with a bloop 2B.  Nielsen grounds to short to end the inning.
Churchill gets on the board in the top of the 4th when Bryson Jones takes the 1st pitch from Cunningham and drives it 375' over the right center field fence for a solo HR.  After 2 K's Kyler Wallis singles to center, but the rally is cut short when a line drive by Andy Aruda is snared by the 2nd baseman Walker to end the inning.
The game stays 2-1 Sheldon until the bottom of the 6th when the Irish add one more run against a tiring Lessel when he hits Nielsen with a pitch. Nielsen is sacrificed to 2nd and scores on a single by Dillon Lewis.  Lessel walks the pinch hitter Dan Herr and is replaced by Devin Murray.  Murray shuts down the rally by striking out the next 2 two batters.  Cunningham finishes strong by getting a fly to center, his 9th strikeout, The last batter, Chase Kearney, hits another line drive that is hit right at the 1st baseman Nielsen and he makes the catch to end the game.

Irish view

The Irish beat Churchill 3-1 in the league opener for both clubs.  It was a grind as both starting pitchers, Cason Cunningham for Sheldon and Jake Lessel for Churchill each struck out nine batters.
Cunningham worked out of a bases loaded jam in the first inning, and then settled down giving up just two hits in a complete game victory.
The Irish opened the scoring in the second inning when Cunningham led off with a double.  He advanced to third when the left fielder did not field the ball cleanly.  With one out, Andrew Leung walked.  Cunningham scored on a double steal.  Sheldon added another run in the third when Ryan Land singled and moved to second base on a balk.  Land stole third before Cooper Stiles hit an rbi double.
Churchill threatened to edge closer in the fourth inning when Bryson Jones homered to lead off the inning.  After two strike-outs, Christen Stocarzyu singled for the Lancer's second and final hit, but was stranded there.
Sheldon tacked on an insurance run in the sixth inning.  Brett Nielsen was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Cunningham's sacrifice bunt moved him to second.  Sophomore catcher, Dylan Lewis singled sharply to right scoring Nielsen to give the game its final score.

Sheldon travels to Marshfield on Monday at 5:00pm.  Marshfield dropped their opening league game to Willamette 5-0.

2010 Record:
    League   2-13
    Overall    6-16-1

PRE - LEAGUE
Marshfield opens league play Tuesday the 15th against Coquille. As of March 1st, the Pirate pre-league schedule consists of just four games, all against 4A and 3A teams. Marshfield also has Siuslaw scheduled during the first week of league games on a day they would normally have a bye.
Pitching must improve this year for the Pirates. They lost some senior pitchers which will give some new faces a great opportunity. They'll need to grow quickly in their pre league games.

LEAGUE
The Pirates hope to climb out of the cellar this year. It's likely that they'll once again spoil one of the top team's seeding by catching them off guard.
The Pirates finish each round with North Eugene, South Eugene and Thurston. There aren't really any soft spots in the rest of the league, and the final three games of each round will be against defending state champions North Eugene and then 6A teams South Eugene and Thurston.
