Marist High School jumped out to an early lead on Marshfield High School and captured a 21-2 victory on Friday in Coos Bay.
The Spartans left no doubt early with 11 runs in the first three innings. Marist got its early runs on a fielder's choice in the first inning and a two-run double by Will Swindling and an RBI double by Ryan Inouye in the second inning. Marist easily handled Marshfield's pitching as six hitters combined for 11 hits, nine RBIs and 16 runs scored.
Marist starter Alex Torres showed good command, throwing strikes on 31 of his 54 pitches. Torres collected six strike outs and walked two.
Marist added four more runs in the top of the third. Bennett Chiongbiong started the inning with a single, bringing home Will Bartlett. That was followed by an error, scoring Jerry Rouleau.
Marist built upon its lead with three runs in the fourth. A single scored Zach Eyster to start the inning. That was followed by a fielder's choice, bringing home Bartlett.
Marist High School increased its lead with seven runs in the fifth. Bartlett kicked things off with a single, plating Inouye. That was followed by a passed ball, bringing home Eyster.

Sheldon       16
Marshfield      2

Sheldon got the bats going this afternoon in Coos Bay defeating Marshfield 16-2.
The Irish got going right away when Ryan Land walked, stole second and came home on a Cooper Stiles rbi single.  Brett Nielsen reached base on a fielders choice as Stiles beat the throw to second.  With two outs, Dylan Lewis doubled home Stiles and Andrew Leung singled to bring home Nielsen and Lewis to give Sheldon a 4-0 lead.
Marshfield scored once in the bottom of the inning, but Sheldon came back in the top of the second on a two-out solo home-run from Daniel Herr.
In the fourth inning the Irish broke the game open, scoring seven runs in the frame.  JJ McMahon led off with a single, Land singled and Daniel Herr drove in both with a two run single.  A walk to Stiles was followed by hits from Nielsen, Cason Cunningham and Dylan Lewis third hit of the game. After Leung walked, Cameron Herr hit a sacrifice fly and Land singled again to cap the inning.
Sheldon wasn't finished.  In the top of the fifth the Irish scored four more runs with both Ivan Faulhaber and Cameron Herr having key hits in the inning.
Dylan Lewis was 3-3 with a double and a triple, Daniel Herr was 2-3 with a home run and Ryan Land was 2-3.  On the mound Brett Nielsen went four innings, giving up two runs and striking out eight.
The Irish are 6-4 on the season and 2-0 in league play.  Sheldon takes on Thurston Wednesday afternoon at 5:00 pm at Tom Bowen field.  Sheldon Hall of Honor inductee, Fred Hauck will throw out the first pitch.
The following update is from the Saturday jv game between Sheldon and Churchill from Coach Vogel.

Last Saturday the Sheldon JV baseball team beat Churchill 11-1 in 5 innings.  Tony Tokatly pitched the entire game giving up three hits and allowing only 1 run.  The Irish played great defense all day long and backed that up with 15 hits.  Gaje McDaniel was 4-4 with two RBI. Ivan Faulhaber was 1-2 with a triple. Tyler Osborne and Taylor Alie each had 2 hits and 3 stolen bases
The Irish are now 2-0 and play Thurston on Thursday 4.7.11 at Thurston High School at 5pm.  We are scheduled to take a school bus to the game at 3:15pm.This is only a 1 way bus.  It will not be bringing the team back.   Are there any parents that would be willing to drive some of the boys to the game so we wouldn't have to take a school bus?
Also, we are looking to make Saturday's game against springfield a double header.  Game time starts at 12 and 2pm.

The Wolverines benched two starters for being late. The replacements went 3-5 with a double and a home run. Unfortuneately, the regular starters are way too young too know about Wally Pipp.

2010 Record:
Lost in State Quarterfinals 13-7 to Newport
    League  12-3 Sky-Em League
    Overall   17-10

PRE - LEAGUE
Marist is thinking big - as in 6A. The Spartans begin their season against Redmond, drop down a couple of levels for a game against 4A North Marion, then take on North Medford from the powerhouse Southwest Oregon Conference. The Spartans also have a game against one of the better 4A programs in the state, North Bend.
Marist is loaded and it looks like they have set up their schedule to test their players.

LEAGUE
The Spartans graduated two super pitchers from 2010's state quarterfinal squad. Finding replacements is key to Marist's chances at a MWL title. Certainly, the Spartans will have the bats.
Marist ends both rounds with games against defending 5A state champion North Eugene. Those games could determine the number one seed at the 5A level. But I'm thinking that both Marist and North Eugene will be knocking off a couple of the 6A teams at least once, and the 6A wins could be a tie breaker.
