2011 Review
Marist complete da successful step up to the MWL 5A/6A league. The Spartans finished league play tied with 5A defending champions North Eugene. The league finale was a thrilling 11 inning 3-0 win over the Highlanders behind the shutout pitching of Kevin Haskin, Will Bartlett, Jerry Rouleau and a three run walk off home run by Jake Britt. A ten game win streak, including three wins at the Red Mountain Tournament in Arizona, prepared Marist for league play. The Spartans finished 12-4 in league, with wins over 6A opponents South Eugene and Sheldon as well as he previously cited thriller over North Eugene. Seven Spartans earned all league honors. Will Swindling and Logan Silver earned first team honors. Second team accolades went to Zach Eyster, Ryan Inouye and Jake Britt. Honorable Mention and Gold Glove recognition were earned by Kevin Haskin and Matt Beattie, respectively. |

It was a beautiful Thursday mid-afternoon day for baseball...finally the weather hit the 70s. The first batter for Dallas, Kade Fast, got on first from an error then advanced to third off of a overthrow to first - fast just like his name. The next batter Josh Spencer hits a sacrifice fly to right which scores Fast. Dallas is up 1-0. Marist pitcher Zach Eyster strikes out the next batter and has the batter after that fly out to Jake Britt in center. Can the Spartans respond to the early score from Dallas? The first two batters ground out and fly out respectively. Then Will Swindling hits a double down the left field line - batter/runner in scoring position. Jake Britt follows Swindling and hits a shot to left center for a single and scores Swindling. Marist answers with a run. The next batter hits into a fielder's choice ending the inning.
The third inning starts off with Dallas' Kody Steele hitting into a single, then steals second. Kade Fast is up again and hits a grounder down the third base line for a single moving Steele to third. On an infield error, Steele scores and now there are runners on first and second. Jarret Peterson lays down a sacrifice bunt which advances both base runners. The next batter, Keaton Weaver is intentionally walked to load the bases. On the next pitch, the next batter, Conner Locke hits a double to left center which scores two. Tyler Totten grounds out to short but still scores another run. Then Matt Goodlett hits a single down the third baseline to score one more runner. The inning ends on the next batter striking out. Score 6-1 Dallas.
Dallas scores one more run in the fourth off of an error and Marist does not score in the third or fourth inning. After a lead off double in the top of the fifth by Totten, then sacrifice and passed ball, Totten scores. Dallas 8 - Marist 1.
In the bottom of five Marist picks up a couple of runs. Bennett Chiongbian leads off with a walk. Alex Torres is subbed in and takes the first pitch to right for a single. Then Matt Beattie hits a ball that hits the left field fence but unfortunately the two base runners had to stay close to base just in case the ball was caught. Beattie singles, Chiongbian scores from second and now there are runners on first and third. Logan Silver hits into a 6-4 fielder's choice and scores Torres. Dallas 8 - Marist 3.
Kevin Haskin who has been pitching since the fourth inning strikes out one, walks one, gives up one single but does not give up any runs in the top of six. Marist was really feeling the pressure to get some runs. They only get one run when the Dallas pitcher balked, scoring Chiongbian who singled to get on and was advanced by a double from Beattie. The top of seven and first batter is retired off a third strike foul tip. The next batter is walked. The batter at the bottom of the order hits a single into left field but as the first runner rounds second, he is frozen when Silver throws to Inouye at second and tags the runner out at two. Will Bartlett relieves Haskin and gets the batter on a third strike foul tip with three pitches. Can Marist make up the four runs to tie the game? Austin Baird takes the first pitch and hits a hard grounder back up the mound which almost hits the pitcher but continues into center field. The next batter flies out to right for out one. Jake Britt hits a fly ball that follows the right field foul line just about to the fence advancing Baird to third and Britt stands up on second. Baird scores on a wild pitch and Britt advances to third. Zach Eyster grounds out to first and scores Britt for an RBI. Two outs. Next up to bat, Ryan Inouye sends a shot over the center field fence even clearing the batter's eye. Marist is down just one run. Next batter, Bennett Chiongbian beats out a throw from third. The tieing run is at first. The next batter grounds out to third for the third out

2010 Record:
Lost in State Quarterfinals 13-7 to Newport
League 12-3 Sky-Em League
Overall 17-10
PRE - LEAGUE
Marist is thinking big - as in 6A. The Spartans begin their season against Redmond, drop down a couple of levels for a game against 4A North Marion, then take on North Medford from the powerhouse Southwest Oregon Conference. The Spartans also have a game against one of the better 4A programs in the state, North Bend.
Marist is loaded and it looks like they have set up their schedule to test their players.
LEAGUE
The Spartans graduated two super pitchers from 2010's state quarterfinal squad. Finding replacements is key to Marist's chances at a MWL title. Certainly, the Spartans will have the bats.
Marist ends both rounds with games against defending 5A state champion North Eugene. Those games could determine the number one seed at the 5A level. But I'm thinking that both Marist and North Eugene will be knocking off a couple of the 6A teams at least once, and the 6A wins could be a tie breaker.
