24 hours after I made Marist my number one pick for the league title, the Spartans gave support to my comments regarding their bats in their 10-0, 5 inning pounding of the North Bend Bulldogs.
In the first inning, Jake Britt hit a towering, slo-motion bomb 375 feet to dead center over the 20 foot high fence. Will Swindling ended the game early in the 5th with a homer of a different sort. A laser guided missile that everyone knew was way, way gone when the ball left the bat. Swindling's ball also carried over the 20 foot fence, returning to earth 385 feet from home plate. The Bulldogs weren't offering up much to work with. The North Bend pitchers walked or hit five batters and moved the Spartans around the bases with wild pitches when the Spartans weren't getting one of their nine hits. Ray Ferrari was 2 for 2 and Matt Beattie rapped a double in the second inning.
Marist has a bye Friday, so they gave their aces, Zach Eyster and Kevin Haskin, two innings apiece. Bennett Chiongbiong started the 5th and closed the game. The Bulldogs led off both innings against Eyster with singles, but he then retired the next three batters in both innings, thanks in large part to three strike outs. Haskin K'd the first batter in the third, but then walked and plunked the next two. The Spartans then pulled off the first of three double plays, one each in the 3rd, 4th and 5th innings. Haskin k'd 2 and Chiongbiong K'd one.
Marist hosts Willamette Monday. The game should be a good one to watch. Both teams have good infields and outfields, Marist has more power at the plate, but Willamette has always hit the ball and figure to do so again this year. The question is pitching. Is Marist ready for the 5A and 6A level game in and game out? Has Willamette found the pitching that will finally get their program over the hump?

Marist travelled up north to play the North Marion High School Huskies after being in Arizona last week. The game started with Marist scoring two runs in the first off a double from Will Swindling and a couple of passed balls. Jerry Rouleau pitched the first three innings giving up only one hit.
Marist scored four earned runs in the second with singles from Will Bartlett, Matt Beattie, Bennett Chiongbiong, and Will Swindling.
Both teams went scoreless for a couple of innings. Then in the fourth, North Marion scored their first run off a single to right field. Marist answered that North Marion run with a solo homerun from Will Swindling. One more Marist run was added in the seventh inning by Zach Eyster hitting in Will Swindling.
Alex Torres came in and closed the last two innings allowing only one last run in the bottom of the seventh. Mr. Swindling went four for four and almost hit the cycle with a single, two doubles and a homerun and also added three RBIs.

At the Mesa, Arizona baseball tournament, Marist wins its first game 6-1 against Phoenix Christian High School. Grant Jamieson got the win by pitching 3 shutout innings even coming through with an inning ending two strikeouts after the bases were loaded. Matt Beattie relieved Grant in the fourth and preserved the win.
Offensively, Marist got going quickly with four runs in the first inning. Austin Baird scored 2 runs off a double to left center in the middle of the first inning and also scored, himself, off a passed ball. Kevin Haskin and Ryan Inouye also added a triple each in the evening game.

You would not have known that North Medford graduated 9 all league players last year by the way they pounded the ball in the first game. Black Tornado Jesse Hornbrook caused the most damage by scoring the first run of the game after getting on with a single. He then homered in his next two at bats.
North Medford's starter, A.J. Doolittle looked invincible through four, with Marist's Matt Beattie the only Spartan to get a hit. Doolittle got a little shaky in the fifth after getting two outs. Doolittle then hit a batter and walked a batter to give the Spartans some hope after falling behind 7-0 in the top of the fifth. But Doolittle got Bennett Chiongbiong to hit into a fielder's choice to end the inning.
Doolittle walked Jake Britt after getting the first out in the sixth. Two batters later Ryan Inuoye batted in Britt to get the Spartans on the board.
Down 7-1 in the bottom of the 7th, Marist put on a nice rally, fueled by Austin Baird's rbi triple to right, but the Spartans finally fell short.
While Marist lost this game, they hit the ball well. Unfortunately, a lot of their line drives were snagged by diving Tornado infielders or run down by Tornado outfielders.
Both teams turned slick double plays and Marist's middle reliever Alex Torres snagged a potential head splitting liner with his mitt, causing a huge cheer and sigh of relief in the stands.

The sun came out and the Marist bats did so also. As the first Marist batter of the second contest of the afternoon, Logan Silver started with a solo home run over the left field fence. A few batters later Ryan Inouye hit a homer over the left center fence scoring two RBIs. After eleven batters, the first inning was over and Marist put five runs on the board.
Defensively, Zach Eyster pitched the first five innings just giving up three hits and with the rest of the team held North Medford scoreless. In the fourth, Will Swindling scored the last Marist run of the game with a homer over the left field fence making the score 9-0. North Medford battled defensively not to have a 10-run mercy rule and scored their one run on a throwing error in the sixth inning.
The dark skies approached and after North Medford threw the first pitch in the bottom of the sixth inning, the heavens opened up, it started raining, and the umpire called the game.

Marist traveled to central Oregon for their opening season game against the Redmond Panthers.
The five Marist pitchers scattered six hits amongst the seven innings. Redmond had runners on base in the first few innings but the Marist defense held Redmond scoreless until the last two innings.
Offensively, Marist had a few well-timed hits and capitalized on Redmond's errors. Silver was 4 for 4 with a triple and two rbi's.

2010 Record:
Lost in State Quarterfinals 13-7 to Newport
League 12-3 Sky-Em League
Overall 17-10
PRE - LEAGUE
Marist is thinking big - as in 6A. The Spartans begin their season against Redmond, drop down a couple of levels for a game against 4A North Marion, then take on North Medford from the powerhouse Southwest Oregon Conference. The Spartans also have a game against one of the better 4A programs in the state, North Bend.
Marist is loaded and it looks like they have set up their schedule to test their players.
LEAGUE
The Spartans graduated two super pitchers from 2010's state quarterfinal squad. Finding replacements is key to Marist's chances at a MWL title. Certainly, the Spartans will have the bats.
Marist ends both rounds with games against defending 5A state champion North Eugene. Those games could determine the number one seed at the 5A level. But I'm thinking that both Marist and North Eugene will be knocking off a couple of the 6A teams at least once, and the 6A wins could be a tie breaker.
