It was the last game of the regular season with North Eugene playing to stay tied for first place with Thurston and Marist playing to continue to stay at second place in the Midwestern League. With North Eugene up to bat first, the first three batters were retired with a lineout to second, flyout to center and ground out to third. The same happened on the Marist at bat with the first three batters retired with a strike, ground out to short and strike. In the second inning, Garret Harpole led off and got to first on an infield error. The next North batter hit a grounder to second to Ryan Inouye to start a 4-6-3 double play, Chris Clayton gets the first hit of the game into shallow left field but the next batter hits into a 4-6 fielder choice to end the top of the 2nd inning. Andrew Moore for North Eugene continues to pitch strike outs counting for two more strike outs and a ground out to second. Score is 0-0 at the top of three.
The eighth, ninth and top of the order batters are retired and Kevin Haskin records his first strikeout of the game. Marist comes up to bat and Bennett Chiongbian sends a grounder right up the middle for a single after seven pitches. Ray Ferrari lays down a sacrafice bunt that advances Chiongbian to second. Moore steps it up and the next two batters strike out ending the bottom of the third inning. In the top of four, there were three North batters up and three North batters went down. For Marist, the next four batters came up and only one reached first base being hit by pitch. The next three North batters line out to second, strike out and ground out to second. The next three Marist batters ground out to third, ground out to the pitcher and strikes out. At the end of five, the score is still 0-0.
In the top of the sixth, if felt like both teams were sensing that one of the two teams were just about ready to break the game open. The first North batter was tagged out heading to first, the next batter, Toby Woods was plunked and was now on first, then Erik Long sent a short fly ball into right field. Could this be the break North was looking for to score some runs with runners on first and second? The next batter hits a grounder close to second base on the short stop side which Marist shortstop, Austin Baird, turned into a 6-4-3 double play ending the inning. The first Marist batter bunts foul on the third strike, one out. The next batter, Logan Silver gets walked after a full count but gets picked off first recording the second out. The third batter grounds out to North's Erik Long ending the sixth inning still in a 0-0 tie.
The seventh inning starts off with Shawn Boehm legging out a double that rockets down the third baseline. North has a runner in scoring position with no outs. Marist changes it up with Will Bartlett coming out of the bullpen relieving Kevin Haskin who gave up three hits, two Ks and no walks. On the third pitch, Garret Harpole flies a single to right moving Boehm to third. Now North has runners on first and third with no outs. The Highlanders are on the verge of scoring at least one run in the top of the seventh inning most likely ending the game. Bartlett steps up and gets a fly out to center, then strikes out the next two ending the inning and leaving a man on third. First up to bat in the bottom of the seventh is Will Swindling. After seeing the first strike go by, he hits a tall fly ball to right-center. Was it high enough, was it long enough, was it going to be the walk off solo homer to win the game? It seemed as if the ball was in the air for a long time and it was long enough for North's centerfielder, Ryan Delaney, to run to the fence, get a sense of where the fence was and time a perfect jump that snagged Swindling's homerun that was over the fence for out number one. Wow, what a defensive play! Even with the little sway back in North Eugene's favor, Jake Britt, who was 3 for 4 for the day, hits a single to left center. Britt was left on first when the next two Marist batters struck out and flied out to end the seventh inning. The score is still tied 0-0.
Now we are in extra innings with two teams battling it out defensively. The first two batters ground out to third and first respectively. The next third batter of the inning, Erik Long, is walked. Andrew Moore hits a seeing-eye single between first and second which advances Long to third. Then Shaun Boehm is hit by pitch. All of sudden a two-out inning turns into the bases being loaded and North ready to score. The next batter flies out to center to end the North Eugene threat. In the bottom of eight, Bennett Chiongbian gets a single from a fly to shallow left-center. The winning run is on first with no outs. Can Marist get the runner all the way around the bases? Then Ray Ferrari pushes a sacrafice bunt toward first, gets out but advances Chiongbian to second. The next batter, Matt Beattie, hits a ball on a line that was going over the centerfielder's head. The hit would more than likely score Chiongbian from second to end the game but Ryan Delaney reaches high with his glove as he is running toward the centerfield fence and snags the fly ball over his shoulder for his second spectacular catch of the game. Chiongbian does not advance and remains at second. Logan Silver, the next batter, is intentionally walked. Andrew Moore comes up with two pitches for strikes and gets a foul-tip for the third out. The first batter for North in the top of the ninth inning grounds out to short to start off the inning. The next batter, Chris Clayton, hits a routine fly ball to left field. For those of you who have played at Marist when the sun is setting through the trees on the Willamette River, know that the setting sun lines up perfectly in the eyesight of any left fielder. The shade of the trees were to the left and right of the Marist leftfielder but the sun shown right where the fly ball was hit. The ball's tragectory put it right in the direct sunlight for Marist's left fielder, Logan Silver, who amazingly got his glove up and on the ball but it bounced off his glove. Could this be the break North needed? After a couple of pitches, the next North batter hits a hard grounder to Matt Beattie on third which starts a 5-4-3 double play - ending the top of the ninth inning.
At the bottom of the ninth inning, Andrew Moore and Garret Harpole switch positions. Moore, who only gave up three hits, eight Ks, and two walks, is at third and Harpole is now pitching. North gets the first out with a grounder to the short stop. Jake Britt doubles to left field by hustling to get to second. The next batter grounds out but deep enough for Britt to advance to third. Harpole strikes out the next batter for the third out stranding the runner 90 feet from home. Corey Shuster leads off the 10th inning with a long double from new Marist pitcher Jerry Rouleau, relieving Bartlett who give up two hits, two Ks, and one walk over 2 2/3 innings. The winning run for North is on second. Unfortunately, the next three batters are retired with two ground outs and a flyout. On the other side of the inning, the first Marist batter flies out to center for the first out. Alex Torres subs in and comes up with a single that squeezes through short and third. The little advange is short lived when Marist hits a grounder to Erik Long at short to start a 6-4-3 double play for North to end the 10th inning. The battle is still tied 0-0.
Shaun Boehm leads off the eleventh inning with a fly single to left. The next batter flies out to center for the first out. Kyle Dehaven gets hit by pitch which puts runners on first and second. Then Rouleau gets the next North batter to hit a grounder to Inouye at second to start a 4-6-3 double play, Marist's fourth double play of the game, which ends the inning. Silver leads off with hard ground ball single to left field. Baird hits a fly to right field and far enough for Silver to tag-up and make it to second. Swindling is intentionally walked. Now, there are runners on first and second. After taking the North pitcher to a full count, Jake Britt hits a walk-off homer to right center scoring three Marist runs. Final score 3-0 Marist after eleven innings. A great battle between two great teams.
On the other side of the ball Kameron Bates set down the Lancers in the 1st 2 innings without any scoring. In the bottom of the 3rd the Lancers got busy. Murray reached on an error, a went to 2nd on a bad pickoff throw by the catcher. Leadoff batter Pomeroy drew a walk and then Chase Kearney singled to left to drive in Murray and Pomeroy also scored when the left-fielder over ran the ball and Kearney moved up to 2nd. DeZarn then drove one to deep left that the outfielder got a glove on but could not pull in and he was on base with a 2B and Kearney advanced to 3rd. It looked like Bates would escape without further damage when he K's Subway Jones, but Jordan Thompson hit a wedge shot up the 1st base line that landed just fair and drove in two more runs. Wallis followed with another base hit before a pop up to 1st ended the inning with the Lancers on top 4-0. After Lessel retired the Millers in order, Murray got the Lancers started again with a 1 out single, and then he gets credit for a steal when he was picked off 1st but beat the relay throw to 2nd. Pomeroy lines a single to left to send Murray to 3rd and moves in to 2nd when the throw in from the outfield goes to 3rd. Kearney follows that with a soft line drive to center for a base hit that scores two. A walk to Subway and a 2B down the line by Thompson scores 2 more and the Lancers are on top 8-0. Blaine Dudley comes on to pitch two scoreless innings for the Millers, but Lessel is too tough and the Lancers have a big win. Hitting stars for the Lancers include Pomeroy who went 1 for 2 with a pair of walks and 2 runs scored, Kearney who went 2 for 4 with 2 runs and 3 RBI and Thompson who went 2 for 2 with 4 RBI. |

Another classic pitching dual failed to appear tonight when Marist batters took Sheldon's Brett Nielsen deep into his pitch count in the first inning while taking a 3-0 lead. Marist's Zach Eyster withstood some errors by his defense and pitched six innings before turning the duties over to Kevin Haskins in the top of the seventh with an 8-5 lead.
Sheldon struck first in the first inning when Cooper Stiles singled in Ryan Land, who would go on to score three out of the four times he went to bat. Stiles drove in Land each time.
Silver opened Marist's half of the first by getting hit by a pitch. Three of the next four batters took Nielsen to a 3-2 count and each of the three fouled off a ton of pitches. Silver scored on a wild pitch. Kevin Haskins singled in Austin Baird and Will Swindling. Marist ended the inning with a 3-1 lead on one hit and had run Neilsen's pitch count to 37.
Marist committed three errors in the top of the third and gave up two runs, allowing Sheldon to tie the score.
Eyster apparently decided he wasn't going to lose this game and singled with two outs in the bottom of the third. Ryan Inouye then hit a deep shot for a triple that drove in Eyster for a 4-3 lead after three.
Marist put together another two out scoring string in the bottom of the fourth. Matt Beattie walked, Silver singled in Beattie, Austin Baird got on via an error, and Eyster got an rbi by walking.. 6-3 Marist after four.
Sheldon answered with two runs in the fifth. A walk and an error were followed by a two out double by Cason Cunningham. Marist 6 Sheldon 5.
In the bottom of the fifth, Marist's batter Matt Beattie laid down a perfect suicide squeeze to score Haskins and give Marist a 7-5 lead.
Eyster got two strike outs in the top of the sixth and put down Sheldon 1-2-3.
Three consecutive singles to the left side of the diamond by Swindling, Eyster and Inouye loaded the bases. The novelty sequence of the day was the next Marist batter missing a squeeze bunt, but Sheldon blowing the rundown, letting Swindling score. Then the same batter missed another squeeze and the runner on third finally got tagged out. The batter then struck out. I thought he earned an RBI due to cleverness. Had both runners on third scored, the batter might have invented a new baseball strategy.
Sheldon entered the top of the 7th down 8-5. Will Bartlett took over for Eyster on the mound for Marist. Ryan Land got on for the third time as a lead off hitter, this time by walking. Bartlett then got an Irishman to ground out. Sheldon's Stiles hit a sac fly to score Land. Bartlett k'd the final Sheldon batter to end the game. |

Marist went up for good in the second, scoring eight runs on an RBI single by Matt Beattie, a walk by Jake Britt, an error, a walk by Ryan Inouye, an RBI single by Haskin, and a sacrifice fly by Will Bartlett.
Carlos Larson scores Jimmy Grossman and Joe Schindler off a double in the third.
Logan Silver scores the one run in the bottom of the 3rd inning from one of two Bennett Chiongbiong doubles in the game. Then South Eugene scores four runs in the fourth, just one run shy of tieing the game.
Marist pulls away from South Eugene in the fourth inning by scoring five runs. Bennett Chiongbiong hits his second double of the game and Will Swindling hits a homerun over the center field fence scoring two.
South Eugene scores one more run in the top of the sixth with a solo homerun from Spencer Dunlap. Marist increases its lead by scoring five more runs at the bottom of the sixth and ending the game. |

The first three Springfield batters started off with fly balls and the side retired. Logan Silver started the Marist lineup with a single then Austin Baird hits a line over the center field fence to score two. After one pitch, Will Swindling sends a moonshot putting Marist up 3-0. Is this going to be another homerun fest like the last game at Thurston? Jake Britt hits a hard line drive that takes Springfield's pitcher Blake Dudley's glove off and the infield is not able to make the play at first. After a wild pitch and pass ball, Britt is on third with Zach Eyster at bat. Eyster hits a 4-3 grounder but Britt is able to score, 4-0 Marist. Dudley settles down but gives up a double to Bennett Chiongbian and ends the inning on a fly to first.
The first batter of the second inning for Springfield, Malik Evans hits a double to the warning track. Then Marist pitcher, Kevin Haskin, strikes out the next two and gets a ground out to short to end the inning. The next three Marist batters are retired which brings up the top of the third inning. TR Ralston hits a single to left, then Kameron Bates flies a homer to right center over the fence. Bates scores two making the score 4-2.
In the top of four, Springfield's Blaine Dudley singles to get on base and he scores one more run off a wild pitch. On the bottom of the fourth, Matt Beattie scores off an infield error. After a few more hits and strikeouts on both sides, the final score is 5-3 Marist.

The Thurston Colts hammered three home runs and dug themselves out of huge holes twice to beat Marist 10-9 in seven innings.
Thurston fell behind Marist 7-1 after the top of the fourth, then pounded back to back homers, courtesy of Aaron Clift and Stefan Drake, to pull within 7-5.
Marist scored twice in the top of the 5th to go up 9-5. Junior Jarren Goddard led off the Colt half with a screaming grounder deep behind second base off of reliever Will Bartlett. Marist's speedy Austin Baird gloved it and threw out Goddard. Then Bartlett got Tyler Johnson to pop up to second. It looked like Kyle Watson would start a rally when he hit a screaming liner to right, but the right fielder didn't have to take a step to catch it. It was a 1-2-3 inning, but the hard hit balls were a foretelling of the climatic sixth inning for the Colts.
Jake Britt led off the top of the 6th for Marist by getting on base with a single. Bartlett then hit a fielder's choice which put him on first. Austin Baird followed with a grounder to the second base side of second which was out of reach of the second baseman. But shortstop Kristian Smith ran the ball down and, in a highlight reel throw, got Baird at first.
Thurston, down 9-5 in the bottom of the sixth then put together a string of hits, coupled with some outfield errors and took the lead 10-9. The leadoff batter doubled and then Drake singled. After a fly out to third, Zach Kopczenski singled in a run. The next three batters kept the singles string alive. Aaron Hoover knocked in Drake. Joey Urness and Goddard both singled and both watched the outfielders charge the ball only to let it go through their legs. That was it, the damage was done. Thurston was up 10-9. Alex Torres came in to relieve and got the next two batters on ground outs.
The game was far from over. Marist loaded the bases on a Ryan Inouye double, a walk, sac bunt, and intentional walk to Silver, who had been hammering the ball all day, including a 400 foot home run. Tyler Johnson came in to relieve with the bases loaded and one out and induced Bennett Chiongbiong to hit into a Kopczenski to Smith to Watson double play.
The game wasn't a pitchers duel. There were five home runs. The three already mentioned, plus a solo homer by Urness in the first and a three run shot by Will Swindling in the third. Strike outs were rare, with Marist going down four times and Thurston five. Marist and Thurston are two of the top three run scoring teams, and this game's score will increase their average.
Marist 9-3 takes on Springfield Wednesday, probably facing Kameron Bates. Thurston 9-3 has Willamette. Sheldon 10-3 hosts North Eugene 9-3 Wednesday. |

Marist's Jerry Rouleau started his no-hitter with two Ks, walk, and pick off at second.
On offense, Marist started with two runs in the first inning off an error and RBI walk.
In the top of the second after the first batter struck out, Marshfield's pitcher, Michael Benitez walked and Mason Anderson sacrifice bunted to get Benitez to second. The inning quickly ended when the next batter struck out leaving the runner stranded on second.
In the bottom of the second, the first batter walked and the second batter reached first on an interesting fielder's choice, then Ryan Inouye hit a line shot over the left field fence scoring three. At the end of two innings, the score was Marshfield 0 and Marist 5.
The third inning was three up and three down for both teams. In the fourth, Rouleau threw two more strikeouts and had a pop up to second. Then Marist scored five more runs in the bottom of the inning with a couple of singles, Matt Beattie scoring from an overthrow, Austin Baird hitting a double scoring two runs, and two consecutive errors on the next two batters scored the final two runs of the inning.
The first Marshfield batter of the fifth inning struck out, the next batter was hit by pitch and the pinch runner got to second on a passed ball. The third batter of the inning walked but the runner on second was tagged out stepping off second base. The last hitter in the line up hit into a 4-6 fielder's choice to end the five inning game. Rouleau finished with no runs on no hits, 8 Ks, 3 walks, and 1 HP.

Marist defeated Churchill Wednesday afternoon 6-2 at the home of the Lancers.
The Spartans started quickly scoring 2 runs in the 1st inning on a hit a walk and an error. The key blow was an RBI 2B by Jake Britt.
While Kevin Haskin was keeping the Lancer bats quiet, the Spartans added two more runs in the 3rd inning on 3 hits. Britt started the inning with another 2B and RBI singles by Haskin and Austin Baird scored the runs.
In the top of the 4th the Spartans added 2 more runs on a walk, another error and a 2 out hit by Britt to make the score 6-0 Marist after the top of the 5th. The Lancer bats got going in the bottom of the inning when Andy Arruda lead off with a 2B and he scored on a 2B by Pomeroy. Chase Kearney followed with an infield hit and DeZarn drove in another run and sent Kearney to 3rd with a 2B to left cutting the margin to 6-2. That was the end on the mound for Haskin and Will Bartlett came in and struck out the next two batters to end the threat.
Marist threatened to blow it open in the 6th by loading the bases with one out on 2 hits and a walk. However, Colin Smith wiggled out of the jam with a K and a pop to 1st to get out of the inning. Bartlett finished strong allowing only 1 base runner and the Spartans prevailed 6-2.

2010 Record:
Lost in State Quarterfinals 13-7 to Newport
League 12-3 Sky-Em League
Overall 17-10
PRE - LEAGUE
Marist is thinking big - as in 6A. The Spartans begin their season against Redmond, drop down a couple of levels for a game against 4A North Marion, then take on North Medford from the powerhouse Southwest Oregon Conference. The Spartans also have a game against one of the better 4A programs in the state, North Bend.
Marist is loaded and it looks like they have set up their schedule to test their players.
LEAGUE
The Spartans graduated two super pitchers from 2010's state quarterfinal squad. Finding replacements is key to Marist's chances at a MWL title. Certainly, the Spartans will have the bats.
Marist ends both rounds with games against defending 5A state champion North Eugene. Those games could determine the number one seed at the 5A level. But I'm thinking that both Marist and North Eugene will be knocking off a couple of the 6A teams at least once, and the 6A wins could be a tie breaker.
