South added three more runs in the bottom of the 6th, only 1 earned, thanks to 3 hits and 2 Churchill errors.  In the losing effort, Brandon Doerksen went 2 for 3 for the Lancers.  The Lancers open league play this Friday at Sheldon HS at 5 pm.

A late Churchill rally in the 7th inning falls just short as the Apollo Hawks defeat the Lancers 8-6. The game was scoreless through 3 innings as Jake Lessel and the Apollo pitcher dominated the early part of the game.  Lessel allowed only 1 hit and struck out 6 through the 1st 3 innings.
In the 4th Apollo broke through for 5 runs on only 2 hits, and 5 walks.  They added 3 more runs in the bottom of the 6th to up their lead to 8-0.
The excellent starting pitcher for Apollo left the game after 6 innings after throwing 105 pitches, striking out 11 and allowing only 4 hits.
However the Lancers mounted a big comeback in the top of the 7th against 3 different relief pitchers.  They used 6 hits, 2 walks, and a hit batsman to score 6 runs and  they had runners on 1st and 3rd before the 3rd Hawk pitcher of the inning was finally able to retire the side.
RBI hits in the last inning were provided by Chase Kearney, Christian Stolarczyk, Jordan Thompson,(2) Brandon Doerksen and Andy Aruda.

It rained during most of Churchill's game in Arizona today.  However, we prevailed over Lincoln HS from Portland 6-5.
It was scoreless through the 1st 4 innings, until we broke through with 5 runs in the top of the 5th on 3 BB and all 3 of our hits in the inning.  Skyler Perales started the rally with our 1st base hit of the game to lead off the inning.  That was followed by a K, 3 walks and a wild pitch that  produced 1 run.  Then Jordan Thompson lined a clean single to left to score 2, and when the LF over ran the ball another run scored and Thompson went to 3rd.  Jake Lessel singled in Thompson for the 5th and final run of the inning.
Brandon Doerksen pitched a strong 5 innings allowing only 1 hit to the cleanup batter for Lincoln in the 1st inning.  He struck out 5 and he didn't walked a batter until the start of the 6th inning, when he walked the 1st 2 batters he faced.  Doerksen was replaced by Devin Murray
Murray retired the side after walking 3 more batters and forcing in 2 runs.  A single, a walk and a 3 run-homer to start the bottom of the 7th closed the gap to one. Murray bore down and struck out the next batter and got a soft liner to Perales at 2nd base for the 2nd out of the inning.  The next batter hit a 2B to right center, making the batter the potential tying run at second. The last batter hit a ground single into right that Bryson Jones fielded cleanly and made a strong throw home to get the runner trying to score from 2nd by about 20 feet.
   Churchill wins , 6-5.

2010 Record:
    League      8-  7     4th Place
    Overall    10-10-1

PRE - LEAGUE
Churchill graduated a large group of seniors last year. There were just three underclassmen on the regular season roster. The new Lancers will be starting their varsity career against 4A Elmira, followed by a non-league game with 6A South Eugene and then 4A Cottage Grove.
The pre-league schedule is capped off by a trip to Arizona. The Axemen may be hoping to meet some Oregon teams in the sunshine, as the OSAA'a RPI system doesn't have a way to give points for out of state opponents..

LEAGUE
The Lancer's league schedule will give the new Lancers a bit of break. Churchill will start off with two 6A teams, Sheldon and South Eugene, before diving into 5A opponents.
While all games count when determining seeding, whether against 5A or 6A MWL teams, it's likely that a 5A team sweeping its 5A opponents will get the number 1 5A seed. Starting league with two games against 6A teams, gives the Lancers a couple of more games to get ready for their key games.

RETURNING PLAYERS

Churchill had two sophomores, Chase Kearney and Jacob DeZarn, and one junior, Dylan Pomeroy, on their roster last year.
