Churchill and Springfield faced off for 3rd place in the 5A section of the Midwestern League and a home playoff game next Wednesday and the Lancers blanked the Millers 8-0 behind the pitching of Jake Lessel. The junior left-hander fired a complete game 2 hit shutout with 11 K's and only 1 BB. The route going performance required only 82 pitches and game was completed in about one hour and 20 minutes. Lessel allowed a leadoff 2B to Taylor Ralston to start the game and then a one out walk to Ryan Helfrich to put runners on the corners with only one out. Lessel then recorded his 1st two K's of the game on Evans and Dudley to get out of the inning unscathed and the Millers never threatened again. After the walk to Helfrich he set down 17 straight Miller batters until Helfrich lead off the 7th with a single to left. However, he induced two fielders choice ground balls and his 11th K and that was it.

On the other side of the ball Kameron Bates set down the Lancers in the 1st 2 innings without any scoring. In the bottom of the 3rd the Lancers got busy. Murray reached on an error, a went to 2nd on a bad pickoff throw by the catcher. Leadoff batter Pomeroy drew a walk and then Chase Kearney singled to left to drive in Murray and Pomeroy also scored when the left-fielder over ran the ball and Kearney moved up to 2nd. DeZarn then drove one to deep left that the outfielder got a glove on but could not pull in and he was on base with a 2B and Kearney advanced to 3rd. It looked like Bates would escape without further damage when he K's Subway Jones, but Jordan Thompson hit a wedge shot up the 1st base line that landed just fair and drove in two more runs. Wallis followed with another base hit before a pop up to 1st ended the inning with the Lancers on top 4-0. After Lessel retired the Millers in order, Murray got the Lancers started again with a 1 out single, and then he gets credit for a steal when he was picked off 1st but beat the relay throw to 2nd. Pomeroy lines a single to left to send Murray to 3rd and moves in to 2nd when the throw in from the outfield goes to 3rd. Kearney follows that with a soft line drive to center for a base hit that scores two. A walk to Subway and a 2B down the line by Thompson scores 2 more and the Lancers are on top 8-0. Blaine Dudley comes on to pitch two scoreless innings for the Millers, but Lessel is too tough and the Lancers have a big win. Hitting stars for the Lancers include Pomeroy who went 1 for 2 with a pair of walks and 2 runs scored, Kearney who went 2 for 4 with 2 runs and 3 RBI and Thompson who went 2 for 2 with 4 RBI.

Churchill and North Eugene played a tight defensive game at the home of the Lancers on Monday afternoon and the Highlanders prevailed 3-0.
Kyle DeHaven threw the 1st 5 innings on the mound allowing only 2 hits. A two out 2B in the 4th inning by DeZarn that bounced off the fence in left-center was the 1st hit and Jake Lessel lined a base hit up the middle with one out in the 5th for the other. Dehaven walked Kyler Wallis after the hit by Lessel, but Dehaven recorded his 6th K and a pop up to 1st to end the threat.
Garrett Harpole completed the three hit shut out, striking out 3, walking one and allowing one hit in the 7th.
Miguel Martinez kept North off the board until the 4th when he walked Harpole to open the inning and Dehaven singled to left to move him to 3rd. A sloppy exchange on the throw in allowed Harpole to score and DeHaven to take 2nd. A balk and an RBI single by Pachano made the error a moot point.
Martinez worked around a lead off single by Eric Long in the 5th, his 3rd hit of the game, without any more scoring. In the 6th he gave up a one out single to Chris Clayton and a two out hit by Pachano, but kept the Highlanders at bay once again. In the top of the 7th Martinez finally retired Long for the 1st time on a grounder to 3rd, but Moore single to left and stole 2nd.
After a walk to Shawn Boehm, Colin Smith came on to relieve Martinez. Smith gave up an RBI single to Harpole, but struck out the next two hitters to end the threat.
After giving up a lead off single to Lessel, he retired the next 3 batters to finish off North's league leading 9th shut out in league play.
Long went 3 for 4 with a 2B and two stolen bases, Pachano went 2 for 3 with an RBI and Lessel went 2 for 3.

Thurston defeated Churchill Friday afternoon 8-5, in a game that was played in a steady rain most of the way. The starting pitchers for both teams, Kyle Watson and Jake Lessel, both pitched well considering the elements. Watson threw the 1st 5 innings for the Colts allowing 4 hits and 2 runs, both earned, and he struck out 5 while walking 7 and hitting one batter. Lessel pitched into the 6th allowing only 5 hits and 5 runs, all earned, while striking out 6 and walking 4 and hitting one batter.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the 3rd as Lessel moved quickly through the Colts the 1st time through the order, while Watson escaped unscathed through 3 while stranding 5 Lancers. Smith hit a one out single in the bottom of the 3rd, stole 2nd and scored on a base hit to right by Hoover. Urness drew a walk and Stolarczyk made a nice sliding catch on a line drive to left center by Goddard for the 2nd out and Lessel got a pop up to 2nd to escape without any more damage.
Stolarczyk lead off the top of the 4th with an infield hit in the hole and took 2nd when the throw was wide of 1st. After a pair of K's he scored when Murray laced a 2 out single to right. Watson then walked Kearney and hit Thompson with a pitch to load the bases, but got out of the inning when the next batter grounded into a force play at 3rd. The Colts did not score in the bottom of the inning and the Lancers took the lead in the top of the 5th. Subway Jones lead off with a walk, took 2nd on a wild pitch and scored on a 2B to right center by Colin Smith. Watson retired the next 2 batters on a K and a pop up and then he walked another Lancer. He got out of the inning when Murray hit one sharply to left and Joey Urness made a nice catch to retire the side.
In the bottom of the 5th Lessel retired the 1st two batters, but he walked Urness on five pitches. That would come back to haunt him when Goddard worked the count full and then hammered a fastball over the wall in left-center to give the Colts a 3-2 lead. Lessel got out of the inning by striking out the next batter.
Aaron Clift replaced Watson to start the 6th and Kearney greeted him with a line single to left on his 1st pitch. After a nice sac bunt by Thompson moved the runner over, DeZarn drilled the 1-0 pitch in the same direction as Goddard's HR in the previous inning and it hit the fence a couple feet short of a HR. DeZarn legged out the RBI triple and the game was tied. Subway Jones flied to right and the Lancers had the lead again 4-3. Clift gave up another hit to Smith and then got a K to finish the inning. When Lessel retired the 1st two batters in the bottom of the 6th it looked like the Lancers were heading to the 7th with a 4-3 lead. However, a slow roller toward 2nd by Drake turned into an infield hit and Lessel walked the next hitter ending his day on the mound. Devin Murray replaced Lessel and he walked Smith to load the bases. Hoover hits the 1-0 pitch down the 3rd base line that Thompson is unable to come up with and Hoover's 2B scores two to give the Colts the lead 5-4. Urness hits a ground ball that should end the inning and a fielding error allows two more runs to score. Goddard finishes the scoring with another RBI hit and the Colts lead 8-4,
The rain that got worse during the 6th inning continues to come down and clearly bothers Clift as he hits 3 of the 1st 4 batters he faces. A wild pitch scores one run, but he gets a fly ball to right and a K to finally end it with the Colts on top 8-5. For the Lancers Colin Smith was 2 for 4 with a 2B and an RBI and DeZarn had the big RBI triple. For the Colts Hoover was 2 for 4 with 3 RBI and the big star was Goddard who went 3 for 4 with with the big HR and 3 RBI.

Thurston may be coached by Phil Dube, but the players must be looking to Alfred E. Newman for advice. The "'What? Me Worry?" Colts pulled off another late inning come from behind win Friday night in a game played in sloppy conditions.
The Lancers had their chances. Churchill couldn't take advantage of six walks/hit batters, two hits and an error during their first four at bats. The Lancers stranded 8 runners on base the first four innings, scoring just once in the third on an RBI single by Devin Murray to go up 1-0..
Fortuneately for Churchill, pitcher junior Jake Lessel was pitching a masterful game in tough weather conditions, striking out five through four innings, and giving up just one run on an Aaron Hoover single, which plated Kristian Smith in the third, which tied the game at 1-1..
The Lancers took the lead again in the top of the fifth. The Colts walked Bryson Jones, who wasn't seeing in a lot of hitable pitches. Colin Smith then doubled in Jones. Churchill stranded two more runners in the 5th, but Lessel had the lead 2-1.
Lessel quickly got the first two outs, but walked Joey Urness. Jarren Goddard came to the plate and when the Lancers moved their fielders to the right side of the field, signaling a fastball, Goddard loaded up and jacked it out of the park, for a 3-2 Colt lead at the end of five.
Churchill also must have a couple of copies of Mad magazine in the dugout. The Lancer's didn't seem too worried and scored twice in the top of the sixth. Junior catcher Chase Kearney singled, soph Jordan Thomson laid down a great sac bunt. Junior Jake DeZarn tripled in Kearney. Elder statesman, senior Bryson Jones then hit a sac fly to right to score DeZarn for a Lancer 4-3 lead.
The Comeback Colts couldn't get anything going in their first two at bats in the bottom of the sixth. But after two outs, Stefan Drake singled and the merry-go-round began. Lessel waked the next batter to put men on first and second with two outs. Murray , covered in mud from head to toe, came in to relieve. He walked Kristian Smith to load the bases, with Aaron Hoover coming to the plate. A grounder was all Murray needed to get out of the inning, and he got it, but the ball was just inside the third base line and just outside of the third baseman's glove. Hoover's double scored two and the Colts were up 5-4. An infield error scored two more. Goddard ended the Colt scoring with an RBI single.
Frosh Aaron Clift, who came in in relief in the sixth, continued into the final inning. Clift hit a batter, struck out a batter and hit a batter. A pattern was developing and he should have struck out the next batter to continue the pattern, but he plunked the batter. However, the next Lancer flew out, and then the final out was fittingly, a strike out.
Given the sloppy conditions, it was quite a performance by Churchill's Lessel. He went 5 2/3 innings, struck out six and gave up five hits. Lancer Devin Murray, besides getting the most muddy uniform prize, and there were lots of finalists, made a great play at third in the bottom of the fifth. He tracked down a hard grounder going to his left, slid about 8 feet in the mud, came to a halt and somehow got the throw off accurately and nailed a pretty quick Kristain Smith.
Thurston's Aaron Hoover was 2-4 with a double and three rbi's. Goddard was 3-4, with a homer and three rbi's. Thurston's Kyle Watson got the start, went five innings, struck out five and allowed just three hits.
(I hope this is an accurate rendition of the game. I ran out of ink before things got crazy. Plus the people in the Mancave (they allow women in there now) were distracting me.

Jordan Thompson started and threw 3.7 innings, Colin Smith got the last out of the 4th and Devin Murray came on to strike out the side in the 5th to finish off the game, final score Churchill 14, Marshfield 0.
The Lancers scored in all 5 innings. They scored 2 in the 1st on 2 hits and 2 Pirate errors. The Lancers added 3 more in the 2nd thanks to a walk, a hit batter, another Marshfield error and an RBI triple by Devin Murray. Churchill added a single run in the 3rd after a single by Kyler Wallis and a pop fly to shallow right field by Murray that fell in for a 2B when the right fielder lost the ball in the sun.
In the 4th the Lancers added 2 more on a 2-run homer by Bryson "Subway" Jones that was drilled to straight away left field. In the 5th Churchill piled on 6 more runs, capped off by a 3-run dinger by Colin Smith.
Hitting stars for the Lancers were Bryson Jones, 3 for 3 with a walk, 2 runs scored and 4 RBI, Chase Kearney, 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI, and Devin Murray who went 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI. The Lancers next game is at Thurston on Friday afternoon.

turn three double plays.
OK, Perales did all the work on one.

Churchill won a key game today with a 3-1 win over Willamette, led by Jake Lessel's 94 pitch, 12 k, 3 hit complete game performance.
Two teams from the MWL will have to play play-in games. Churchill's win kept Willamette from sweeping the series and gaining the tiebreaker. Now Willamette heads into a killer schedule to complete the season and will have to bring it to jump over Churchill.
Lessel started shaky in the first three innings, allowing runners to reach first and second with less than two outs each inning. But the infield double play combo of Perales to DeZarn to Thompson put the brakes on Willamette in the first two innings. Lessel probably would have escaped the third, but for an infielder's error.
Lessel then turned on the auto pilot and put down 12 in a row, striking out the side in the 4th and 7th innings.
Meanwhile Willamette allowed the leadoff batter to get on five of the first six innings, yet squirmed out of the poor situations by never allowing more than a run to be scored in an inning. Trent Waggoner started for the Wolverines and handed off the pitching chores to Tony Svennson in the top of the fourth. The little things kill you. Waggoner opened the second with two walks. Lessel laid down a sac bunt moving the runners to second and third and Perales knocked in Bryson Jones on a fielder's choice. In the third, Dylan Pomeroy had a lead off single. Pomeroy made his way to third following a walk to Chase Kearney and a fielder's choice by DeZarn. A wild pitch allowed Pomeroy to score the game winning run.
Churchill added some cushion in the fourth. Perales singled with one out. Kyler Wallis hit a double and moved Perales to third. Devin Murray hit a grounder to Scott Kuvass at short, who cut down Perales at the plate. Wallis moved to third on the play and scored on a Pomeroy single.
Willamette's lone score came in the third. Dustin Leber lead off the inning by working Lessel for one of Lessel's three walks. Jalen Drath laid down a sac bunt. Kuvass singled and Cole Hathawy hit a grounder to short that was misplayed, scoring Leber. Lessel got Waggoner to fly out and struck out Tony Svennson to get out of the inning stranding runners on second and thrid.
The game was well played on both sides. Lessel got stronger as the game progressed. Willamette's D was constantly faced with men on with zero or just one out. For the most part of the game, the Wolverines survived.
Churchill has a bye Monday, while Willamette takes on North Eugene.

Marist defeated Churchill Wednesday afternoon 6-2 at the home of the Lancers.
The Spartans started quickly scoring 2 runs in the 1st inning on a hit a walk and an error. The key blow was an RBI 2B by Jake Britt.
While Kevin Haskin was keeping the Lancer bats quiet, the Spartans added two more runs in the 3rd inning on 3 hits. Britt started the inning with another 2B and RBI singles by Haskin and Austin Baird scored the runs.
In the top of the 4th the Spartans added 2 more runs on a walk, another error and a 2 out hit by Britt to make the score 6-0 Marist after the top of the 5th. The Lancer bats got going in the bottom of the inning when Andy Arruda lead off with a 2B and he scored on a 2B by Pomeroy. Chase Kearney followed with an infield hit and DeZarn drove in another run and sent Kearney to 3rd with a 2B to left cutting the margin to 6-2. That was the end on the mound for Haskin and Will Bartlett came in and struck out the next two batters to end the threat.
Marist threatened to blow it open in the 6th by loading the bases with one out on 2 hits and a walk. However, Colin Smith wiggled out of the jam with a K and a pop to 1st to get out of the inning. Bartlett finished strong allowing only 1 base runner and the Spartans prevailed 6-2.

A late rally by the Lancers falls just short and the Axemen prevail 4-3 Tuesday afternoon at the South field.
The Lancers struck 1st in the top of the 1st when Pomeroy leads off with a 2B to the wall in left, Kearney is HBP, a K and an infield hit by Jones loads the bases with 1 out. Thompson flies to center to score Pomeroy, but Carlos Larson gets another fly ball out to right field to end the inning.
South scores 2 runs in the bottom of the 1st thanks to some shoddy defense by Churchill. Spencer Dunlap delivers a one out single up the middle and a throwing error by the 2nd baseman puts Gus Craig and Dunlap on 2nd and 3rd respectively. Another throwing error by the 3rd baseman on a ground ball by Schindler scores both runners putting the Axeman on top 2-1. Thompson worked a 1-2-3 2nd and Larson escaped a 2 on 2 out jam by getting a ground ball out. DeZarn leads off the 3rd with a 2B and reaches third when Jones grounds out. Larson gets out of the jam by getting another grounder to 3rd with the runner holding and then gets the next hitter on a called strike 3. With 2 outs in the bottom of the 3rd Craig lines a 2B in the gap and scores on a single by Schindler. It stays 3-1 until the bottom of the 5th when Dunlap gets on with a 2 out infield hit and Craig follows him with a 3B to the gap in right center to score Dunlap.
We head to the top of the 7th with South on top 4-1. The Lancers have left at least one base runner on in each of the 1st 6 innings with no one crossing the plate after the 1st inning. In the top of the 7th Larson gets a foul pop to 3rd for the 1st out of the inning and after a 9 pitch at-bat Kearney works for a 1 out walk. DeZarn follows with his 2nd 2B of the day with a shot down the line in left to put runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out. At that point the South coach brings Schindler to the mound to put out the fire. However, Jones gets his 3rd hit of the day with an RBI single to right center sending DeZarn to 3rd. Jordan Thompson hits a slow grounder to 2nd that scores DeZarn and sends Jones to 2nd with 2 out. Schindler sends South home happy when he gets the final out on a called 3rd strike. For the 6th straight game Churchill wins the hits battle 9-6, but loses the game 4-3.
The hitting stars for the game were Gus Craig for South who went 2-3 with 2 runs scored and 1 RBI, and Spencer Dunlap who went 2-3 with 2 runs scored. For Churchill Pomeroy went 2-3 with a run scored, DeZarn went 2-4 with a run scored and Jones went 3-4 with 1 RBI.

The Churchill Lancers and Sheldon Irish opened the 2nd half of league play with a game that looked a lot like the 1st game they played 3 weeks ago at Sheldon. Jake Lessel and Cason Cunningham dominated the hitters in the 1st few innings with Lessel sailing through the 1st 4 innings allowing no hits, no runs, with 5 K's and only 2 walks.
Cunningham also allowed no runs through 4 innings, allowing only a 2 out single to Devin Murray in the 3rd and he had 6 strikeouts and only 1 BB through four.
In the top of the 5th Dylan Lewis leads off with a clean single to left to break up Lessel's no-hitter. Andrew Leung puts down a nice sac bunt that moves Lewis to 2nd. Lessel walks the next 2 batters to load the bases with only 1 out and the top of the order coming up. Land hits a ground ball to 1st that is bobbled and no throw is made and the Irish take the lead 1-0. Dan Herr hits a ground ball to the 2nd baseman and he gets the force at 2nd, but makes a poor throw to 1st that allows a 2nd run to score on the play. Lessel bears down and K's the next hitter to get out of the inning trailing 3-0. The Irish score 3 runs on 1 hit, 2 walks and 2 costly Churchill errors.

The Lancers bounce back in the bottom of the 5th when Jordan Thompson hits a bloop 2B that lands just inside the line in right field. Brandon Doerksen follows with a sharp single to left to put runners on 1st and 3rd with nobody out. Kyler Wallis puts down a nice bunt that scores Thompson and moves Doerksen to 2nd. Skyler Perales lines a single to left that moves Doerksen to 3rd and Murray hits a fly to center that scores Doerksen pulling the Lancers within a run. Cunningham gets a pop fly to 1st to get out of the inning with Sheldon still on top 3-2.
In the 6th inning Mitchell Lewis draws a one out walk and moves to 2nd on a wild pitch. He scores from 2nd when his twin brother Dylan lines his 2nd hit of the game into right field. Lessel gets a ground ball to 3rd and a strikeout to end the inning. In the bottom of the 6th Jacob DeZarn gets that run back for the Lancers when he rips a drive over the center field fence for a solo HR. After Cunningham throws one ball to Bryson Jones he is replaced on the mound by Brett Nielsen and gets out of the inning after allowing a 2 out hit to Thompson and we head to the 7th with the Irish still on top 4-3.

Lessel works a quick 7th inning getting 2 K's and Devin Murray makes a real nice play on a bunt by Dan Herr to retire the side. It looks like the Lancers will go quietly when Nielsen retires the 1st 2 batters in the inning, but Murray gives the Lancers some hope when he lines a single into right center field. Murray moves to 2nd on a wild pitch, and on to 3rd when Pomeroy strikes out, but reaches 1st when the ball in the dirt gets away from the catcher. Chase Kearney hits the 1st pitch from Nielsen sharply up the middle and the 2nd baseman is able to knock it down but he can't make a play and the tying run scores and Pomeroy moves to 2nd. With a 1-1 count on DeZarn the pitcher tries to pick Kearney off 1st and throws wildly past the bag. Pomeroy takes off from 2nd and he scores easily and the Lancers have another big victory over the top team in the league 5-4. Lessel gets the complete game victory, allowing only 2 hits, 4 runs, (only 2 earned) with 9 K's and 5 BB's. Dylan Lewis was 2 for 3 with 1 RBI for the Irish. Devin Murray was 2 for 2 with a run scored and a sac fly, Jordan Thompson was 2 for 3 with a run scored and Jake DeZarn was 1 for 3 with that solo HR for the Lancers The Lancers outhit the Irish 8-2

2010 Record:
    League      8-  7     4th Place
    Overall    10-10-1

PRE - LEAGUE
Churchill graduated a large group of seniors last year. There were just three underclassmen on the regular season roster. The new Lancers will be starting their varsity career against 4A Elmira, followed by a non-league game with 6A South Eugene and then 4A Cottage Grove.
The pre-league schedule is capped off by a trip to Arizona. The Axemen may be hoping to meet some Oregon teams in the sunshine, as the OSAA'a RPI system doesn't have a way to give points for out of state opponents..

LEAGUE
The Lancer's league schedule will give the new Lancers a bit of break. Churchill will start off with two 6A teams, Sheldon and South Eugene, before diving into 5A opponents.
While all games count when determining seeding, whether against 5A or 6A MWL teams, it's likely that a 5A team sweeping its 5A opponents will get the number 1 5A seed. Starting league with two games against 6A teams, gives the Lancers a couple of more games to get ready for their key games.

RETURNING PLAYERS

Churchill had two sophomores, Chase Kearney and Jacob DeZarn, and one junior, Dylan Pomeroy, on their roster last year.
